It's money. Barack Obama is spending more of it here and in other battleground states.
According to the latest figures from the Wisconsin Advertising Project, the Obama campaign spent $1.2 million in N.C. advertising between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4, while the McCain campaign spent $148,000.
Nationwide, Obama spent roughly $17.4 million to McCain's $10.8 in the same time period. In 15 states the project labels as "battleground" - including North Carolina - the spending is closer, with Obama at $8.1 million to McCain's $6.5 million.
Of course, any political veteran will tell you money doesn't win elections, but it allows you to get more of your message out, unfiltered, and in Obama's case lets the campaign have a bit more control over how he is introduced to voters.
Obama N.C. campaign spokesman Paul Cox declined to talk about advertising strategy, but he tells me that Obama's success is due to more than money.
"One of our greatest sources of strength is our grassroots organization," says Cox, pointing to the campaign's 45 offices and 17,000 active volunteers in North Carolina. "We are reaching out to virtually every area of the state. It would be very difficult for the McCain campaign to catch up to us..."
The McCain campaign did not return a call for comment.
The 9/28-10/4 numbers in battleground states are below. They are an intriguing snapshot of where the campaigns are putting their emphasis - and not:
Colorado: McCain,$801,000; Obama $980,000
Florida: M, $659,000; O, $2,213,000
Indiana: M, $179,000; O, $614,000
Iowa: M, $227,000; O, $172,000
Michigan: M, $1,250,000; O, $1,590,000
Minnesota: M, $608,000; O, $121,000
Missouri: M, $193,000; O, $492,000
North Carolina: M, $148,000; O, $1,236,000
New Hampshire: M, $160,000: O, $354,000
New Mexico: M, $144,000; O, $185,000
Nevada: M, $329,000; O, $616,000
Ohio M, $1,727,000; O, $2,218,000
Pennsylvania $1,645,000 $2,202,000
Virginia $547,000 $2,057,000
Wisconsin $896,000 $1,189,000

This just goes to show that Obama is much smarter than McCain. Go Obama.
It is disgusting that the campaigns are spending this much money on a presidential race. And 30 minutes of prime-time space makes it seem like he is trying to buy my vote.
Matbe another reason is that McCain has no clue how to deal with the economic mess. He was one of the biggest champions of deregulation. His only response is "Bill Ayers, Bill Ayers". His first decision was to pick a self-charicature as a running mate. Choosing him for president would be like re-electing Hoover in 1932.
Nothing like buying yourself an election. Mccain has no-one to blame but himself and his so called "campaign finance reform". Pretty bleek for patriotic non socialist Americans.
Not only does this show the type of leadership that Obama brings to the table, but it also speaks to way he will handle this economy once in office. He better organized, has better people in place to carry out his plans, and is more prepared to take on any challenge that may be presented to him.
Hillary Clinton is now 20 mil in the hole from her campaigning, John McCain was to afraid to take the chance of not having the 80 mil in public funding and put the oneous on his party to raise the capital he needed. This just speaks to the heart of this election...the very thing that this country was built on has propelled Barack into a position that most would've never imagined.
When preparation meets opportunity, success is around the corner. No one can stop that!!!
Or shall I say...what you sow, so shall you reap!
Congrats Barack, you have my vote NOV 4th!!! And Thank you!!!
A number of states are being checked for Acorn causing voter-registration fraud. Obama gave $800,000 to Acorn. North Carolina may be a state that is seeing voter-resigration fraud. If not detected, you CAN buy an election.
You're confusing correlation with causation. The reason Obama has been spending more money in NC is because he realized that it was up for grabs. This is because much of the nation is fed up with the way this country has been run during the Bush administration, and they are angry now that everything is coming home to roost. It's the same reason that the Republican Elizabeth Dole finds herself behind in the polls; it's not because Hagan is spending so much more money, it's because people are tired of the Republican establishment that caused most of this mess, and they want a CHANGE.
It would be great to see some ads on judicial appointments -- the candidates couldn't be more different in this respect. McCain promises judges who will automatically roll back abortion rights and civil rights, while Obama promises thoughtful judges on these critical issues.
New Acorn/Obama Ad, very hard hitting
The amount of money being spent on advertising is outrageous. Who benefits from this? The media. And there's no way they all separate advertising from editorial like they say they do. Apparently our government needs this money for all the bail-outs. Which candidate will divert his funds to help the American taxpayer? Which, of course, is a rhetorical question.
almost $30 million between them - I can think of much better ways that money could have been spent given the economic situation we're looking at.
I wonder how much that 30 minutes of airtime Obama just purchased is costing...
something to think about when looking at how the candidates manage their campaign money...who's to say they won't manage government spending the same way?
Spending more money and showing a political commercial repeatedly does not and will not change my vote. Can you just imagine what that kind of money that has been raised for ALL the political candidates and SPENT could do for the poor, homeless, children health, etc. It's absolutely ridiculous that we have these candidates spending money like water. If this is what they do now, wait until they hit the White House. You cannot produce money to enable all these "projects" Obama THINKS he will start. HELLO AMERICA! We Are BROKE! We will be paying more taxes and getting NOTHING in return! It does not take an educated economist to figure that out. All you have to do is look at your own weekly paycheck, your monthly bills, and see what's left. WAKE UP PEOPLE! NEITHER candidate is going to be able to do anything for us. We will be PAYING for all the money that has been spent on the war, pork, and all of the other expenditures the American people are not privy to.
Obama is NOT "buying the election." Buying the election would be if he were self-funding his own campaign, a la Mitt Romney or Ross Perot. THAT would be "buying the election." Let's look at this from another angle. Obama has more money than McCain because people vote with their dollars. More people have given more money to Obama than McCain because more people like Obama than McCain. Pure and simple. And Obama would be a fool not to spend the money he has raised. If he were to lose the election, and if it were because he didn't spend what he needed to, even though he had the money -- then his supporters would rightly be highly disappointed and angry. Politicians raise money to spend -- not to sit on! And voters vote with their dollars. I repeat, Obama is not buying this election, because he's not spending his own money!
It is apparent that anyone who states that McCain is a champion of deregulation is totally ignorant about the housing and financial crisis. You really need to google and do a little research on factural date before you speak. It is recorded, and written and clearly shows that the democrats were the ones fighting deregulation of the housing and mortgage industry and that the democrats who brought and fought for the community reinvestment act. Please, do your research then comment on deregulation. Please do not repeat something that is not facturally documented. It is insulting to the americans who know the truth and choose to avoid anymore of the democrat's bull. Show me one document that proves the republicans support the deregulation vs. the democrats. Just post the links.
amen to the increased taxes. Anyone with just a portion of a brain would figure out that there will be no tax breaks. Even if obama states that he will give a tax break, what he is not telling you is that 2 tax breaks given by the Bush administration will be expiring soon and he is not going to renew either. Some break there for all of you obama fans. Just remember, money trees are not growing in Washington. Get a brain.
Please do the research on what role democrats have played in the last 15 years. I mean, the factural research, not what obama wants to slice and dice for you. You will be amazed at the facts, if you take your blinders off and if you are really concerned about this mess and its makings, you won't support the democratic ticket. I have worked in the housing industry for several years and can actually say, i know first hand who is responsible and have actally observed it in action.
factural?!? nice word - sounds like something W would say
Socialists for Obama!!! We can all make the same wages. It will be so much easier for everyone. And it will all be equal! Obama said he would be his 'brothers keeper'. I'm tired of working and fighting racism. Everyone won't have the standard of living they are use to, but no one will have 'more' than me! Of course, I know that Government officials have to make more, because they are our leaders. And they have to look good for other countries, but hey...that's o.k. We can cheer him in the parades, and salute his pictures that are pasted and plastered everywhere. I LOVE Amerika!
Sorry, it was a typo, FACTUAL data. I know how to spell. I am amazed that you found the error. So what is the excuse for your ignorance? Just too lame to research or you just do not care. Whoever votes Obama, obviously does not care about themself or their family.
Obama is NOT going to give you anything because there will be nothing to GIVE!! But he can take away your rights and he will. He has lied every step of his way. He is a dangerous person who associates with dangerous people including those from Pakistan. He has bought the vote by giving ACORN $800,000 to register fake voters!! HE IS AN EMPTY SUIT.
I take exception with the idea that Obama is buying our votes, or that it makes you sick he is spending this kind of money. Obama has raised a tremendous amount of money from people like me who can only afford to give $50 or $100. I have never given to a campaign and that is the case with several other Obama donors. He is not just getting his money from some PAC or special interest lobbyist.
I have a question in regards to obama stating that 95% of americans will receive a tax break under his plan. If this is true and we have 40% of americans not paying taxes(this is fact) then is obama going to send a check to those 40%? Does everyone realize that the corporations and indiviuals who have money already pay 40% in federal taxes. And if obama increases their taxes it will go much higher. Why would they want to stay in the US? If they stay, do you realize that the tax increases will be passed to the consumer? Some plan huh? The spending that the obama plan is showing is for over 1 trillion dollars, so I guess americans will pay one way or the other. Hmmm, sounds fishy to me. Why would obama vote over 94 times to increase taxes and all of a sudden want to reduce taxes? His history does not support his plan.
obama is getting his money from PAC, LOBBYISTS, and a lot of FUND RAISERS BY Hollywood.
I can hardly wait to vote for the Senate's most liberal member and his 140-odd days of actual experience. Then, following about three months of lavish parties and concerts by Barbra Streisand and about half a million other limousine lefties celebrating "hope, change, et al," Barack and Co. will get down to business, and that will be seminal moment for me. His presidency will be an unmitigated disaster, but at least it will be spun as a grand success by the media because, of course, Obama is above reproach. Whatever goes wrong will be promptly blamed on George W. Bush (just like it is now).
So welcome, President Obama -- now the "whole world" will be in love with America again, including bin Laden and his pals, and the redistribution of wealth and Jimmy Carter approach to corporate taxes will ensure that Atlas shrugs all over again. I just hope the blowup is over and done with in just 4 years, and President Obama can retire to some Chicago think-tank where he will be worshiped and adored for the rest of his days, despite anything he has ever accomplished.
what's funny to me is i see so many comments written by "anonymous" why is that? if you're so right in your thinking, research, your facts why do you hide behind it? it makes absolutely no sense.
