Our favorite political professor, Wake Forest's Allan Louden, is stopping by one more time with a a critique of Barack Obama's half-hour commercial last evening.
Louden, a debate scholar and political communications professor at Wake, has informed and entertained Ballot readers since the primaries with his analysis of ads, speeches and debates. His final grade goes to a wholly different sort of pitch - a 30-minute infomercial.
Says the professor:
“We interrupt our normal program to bring you a special featuring Barack Obama.” It just so happens that the normal programming in N.C. these days is an onslaught of Obama ads and coverage of state-stops by Barack and Michelle.
The mediated political landscape - wall-to-wall Obama - takes away some of the “special” from the Obama special. In our metro paper this morning, coverage of Obama’s infomercial was pushed from the front page by coverage featuring, you guessed it, Obama.
My sense is that the film will disappear into the clamor of campaign coverage, not long remembered for influencing campaign results. In the current climate, it was more about reinforcing an established brand, making comfortable a vote for America’s first minority president.
The program itself, however, was radiantly presented, unarguably persuasive for anyone who watched with an open mind.
It would be justifiable to point out that there was nothing new in Obama’s 4 million dollar prime-time commercial, yet the message was all about the new. Change was the motif, but a change in service of the American we aspire to become, garnished with the American we nostalgically remember.
Obama, as narrator, displayed little pretence of royalty, opting more for rhetorical acts of identification. He introduced a progression of representative middle-America families and comfortably sat at their kitchen tables and shared stories of parallel relatives. The film was less about Obama the candidate and more about him as embodiment of what American could become—One America.
The quasi-documentary was pastel, soft, safe, but also aimed at policy, especially health and jobs. It was Obama’s “convention film” in the tradition of Ronald Reagan’s “Morning in America,” the archetype of winning candidate films. The story, from a narrative perspective, was coherent and quiescently American.
The half-hour infomercial has been lauded as something new in political advertising, yet purchasing a half hour to address the voters was historically a common practice through the 90s. Most were not memorable, trumped by events and timing.
Obama’s commercial has one technical trick that added drama. The half hour concluded with a live cut from a rally in Florida, itself not particularly additive, but enticed viewers to stay-tuned to see how this innovation would work.

What does Louden mean by "Managed to be over-the-top without being over-the-top?" He gives the infomercial an "A," so I guess he it's something good.
It didn't even mention McCain; I wonder if McCain could talk to the American people for 30 minutes without saying something negative about Obama and his plans for the future???
would be nice if the "Law of Unintended Consequences" was actually taught these days.
btw, this primetime Infomercial was only possible b/c Obama lied to the American People on Campaign Finance, one of many. Way to condemn him for it Observer!!! Real 'transparency' he's showing there.
here is one article... among many... that talk about what was spin vs what is reality... the biggest thing is that he keeps saying that he is going to cut funding to programs that don't work, but he has never been specific about what. Also, his spending cuts and tax hikes won't pay for all of his promises. He can't do what he's promised without raising everyone's taxes.

The show last night did not change my mind. I was 100% for Hillary and I could not believe that she did so little to maintain her lead. So, I went to McCain. I am well aware of his collaborating with thieves in the past but he got over that and so did I. Yet because of his recent change in policies and personalities I voted for Obama.I did not want to because we do not see eye to eye on everything but then I have never been on 100% with any candidate. I am no one’s puppet. However I am not into making bad choices either and he is simply the best of the remaining choices. As for the tax increase on the $250k I make more than that and I give more than the tax increase in charity and I will continue to because I get to write off nearly 4% because of charity and with the tax shelters I will write off the tax increase too. It is not rocket science and don’t forget that I still get to take advantage of the Bush tax breaks for the next 2 years. I am not complaining and I am greedier than most and it shows in my bank account. Hey teacher! If your brother does not know how to manage his $250k have him send it to me. I started with nothing and turned that around. We had an outhouse for a bathroom! I still cut my own grass but I am old school and was taught that a man should maintain his own yard so whatever right. In all I will be able to continue to do what I want with or without the tax break and if you have money and are not willing to help others out then please leave this country immediately! Take your cash and buy you an island somewhere and get the hell out! If you are living just for you do it somewhere else. The USA does not need you! I have discovered that the more I give the more God gives to me. It is clear that everyone does not know that all this belongs to God and we are simply stewards over his money for a short while.
Follow the Yellow Brick road !!

I am so confused how there are people that are actually buying the notion that McCain's tax plan will create jobs. His tax plan is a fraternal twin of George Bush's, and look at where it has gotten us.
The GOP has had control for 6 of the last 8 years, and it has given us catastrophic results. John McCain was a part of that, a leader to be exact. For him to try to paint himself as a maverick now when he has admitted that he has voted with George Bush 95% of the time, is laughable.
How can anyone think that giving tax breaks to corporations will create jobs being that that is what we've been doing for the last 8 years, and the corporations have been laying dedicated workers off, shipping jobs overseas, and charging the public even more for their goods and services.
Big business has had it's chance, and now it is time that the American citizen take this country back from the fatcats that have had their own personal interst at heart.
"if you have money and are not willing to help others out then please leave this country immediately!"
Does that apply to Obama, who gave less than 1% of his healthy millions to charity up until he decided to run for president in 2004, then upped it to 5%? Compare that to John McCain, who donated over 25% of his adjusted gross income to charity last year.
If you think the media, in general, has been light on criticism of Barack Obama on changing positions on how he has his campaign financed, look towards a true bias in the media. That bias does not lean towards blue or red, but towards green. Traditional media, particularly print, are struggling. Add the slow economy to that, and these organizations want advertising dollars wherever they can get it. So, when a candidate is willing to pump millions of dollars into your industry through advertising, you're naturally not going to want to shut off that gravy chain.
So yes, the general news media likely leans toward Barack Obama. But, its a financial choice, not a partisan one.
TRAIN, GOOD COMMENTS...YOU ARE AN AMERICAN.....
Why is everyone so focused on taxes being raised or cut? The truth of the matter is no matter if taxes are raised or cut, the spending of that tax money is what's important. Over the past 8 years, the Republican party (the party of conservatism) lead by your President Bush, has added more than 6 trillion dollars to the national deficit. That's the way to cut taxes, and help this country move forward. Let's bring in less money, and spend more money, that way we will have a growing economy and smaller government. Yeah right, good luck with that!!! Republicans open your eyes, the very party that you are loyal to is driving this country into the ground. We spend 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq, we've already given over a trillion dollars in this bail out effort and yet still McCain is still talking about cutting taxes. Not to keep bringing up Bush, but before he became President, everything he touched in business failed...now McCain (the epitome or mediocrity and nepotism at it's best) wants to come along and follow the exact same destructive path as Bush. Think people, think. That may be to much to ask, but I will do it anyway
Hi all,
Couple of things:
1) Let's watch the namecalling and falsehoods/smears in comments. Thx.
2) On the Obama tax plan, the distinction the campaign makes regarding income levels is who is getting a tax "cut" and who is not getting their taxes raised. Also, if I'm reading the plan correctly, Biden was talking about individuals, not families, when he made his 150k remarks.
Giving to God and having it taken by gov. and redistributed are two totally different things in my own opinion. I give as well, but I also get a little protective when people start talking about taking. The 250 is a mere smoke-screen, I believe it will be much lower than that. Kind of like 700 billion was enough and now it's not.
The Republicans continued talk about the cost of this program...... LOL, they will do and say anything to smear Obama.
It is not Obama's fault that A-list Stars are giving him money! He is backed by real millionares, not aspiring plumbers who hope to one day make $250,000. McCain and his base are jealous that there is none who would give him that kind of money. Now that McSame is running out of money, and Obama is taking over the media, he has decided to bring up old stuff. How come he never mentioned this before now? I can't believe the tactics. This is why NC and so many others are toss up states. Take that traditional red out of NC!
Obama/Biden '08!
Obama has changed the definition of "tax cut" to mean much more than a lowering of your tax rate. Now it means Welfare in various forms.
We went down the road before, Clinton campaigned on a 'middle class tax cut' and immediately reversed course once elected.
basically Obama = Santa Clause
pstonge - even if Biden was referring to individuals - their campaign has historically been saying $250k and up for families, $200k and up for single filers.
So, according to last night's ad, Obama now says $200k or up for families and if you are correct that the $150k Biden said (though I am pretty sure from the video clip of that speech - he said families, perhaps another Biden gaffe) refers to single filers, that is still a ($50k)change from the initial plan that they have been so vocal about.
Anon, 12:15: I'll go back and check the plan, but I believe the distinction is who gets a tax cut versus who doesn't have their taxes raised. So at 200k or less, you'd see a tax cut. At 250k, you'd not see either a cut or a hike.
I will check...
btw, the actual Rich don't pay huge tax rates no matter what Obama does(these are his friends). The actual rich(old money) have effective tax rates around 10% usually because much of their income isn't coming from traditional salaries. They have it locked up in Tax shelters like Tax Exempt Bonds(0% Tax).
Its those aspring to come from nothing and move up the latter who are getting penalized. That aspiration is what grows the economy and creates jobs, Obama wants to Tax that aspiration. When you tax something, you get less of it. In this case its the End of Prosperity.
The comment by crystalbass is very misleading. The salary of McCain and his wife, doesn't even compare to that of the obama family. Add to the fact that McCain and his wife have no small children to care for. Lets not forget that McCain does possess 10 cars and is not hurting whatsoever financially.....yet he complains about how he and his friends are going to have to cough of an extra 3% in tax. These are the people he is looking out for, not the middle class.
12:08 Before Obama ran for President he did not make millions; the guy only had 1 Family car. As for McCain with 7 houses and 13 cars I am sure he uses his 25% donation to charity as a tax write off...
and if he cuts the Military by 25% as Liberals in Congress are proposing, we will fold like a tent. Since he's a leftist and democrat, not telling what if anything he will cut to make way for his $1 Trillion in new spending, we should assume its the Military.
This is what Putin and our enemies have been salavating over the prospect of.
Anonymous 12:15,
If you feel that the economic plans of George W. Bush, and even his father, George H. Bush, was better than the economic policies of Bill Clinton, then by all means, vote for McCain.
I for one, feel that bringing back the "tax cuts" of the Clinton era will bring some much needed relief to our country.
Also, all I see on these boards and hear from the conservative base is a bashing of Obama's economic policy. Can anyone out there please enlighten me as to what parts of John McCain's economic platform is going to be helpful to the vast majority of our nation, the middle class?
Hey GOP posters, quit wasting time beating your head against the wall on here. Please go to the GOP office and volunteer to campaign these last few days. Our work ethic is proven to be greater and we will have this advantage over the closing days. Please do not waste your time arguing with a liberal, it will make you crazy.
John Kerry for example, the wealthiest member of the Senate, when he ran in 2004 and released his tax records we found that he paid an effective tax rate around 11%.
Kerry = the truly rich.
a Middle Class guy who starts a business, works hard and starts to finally make a decent income is NOT RICH, even if his salary reaches $250k a year(then half of it is taken in fed/state taxes).
It also makes it very, very hard for Income mobility, when you come from nothing and get taxed like this its hard to accumulate wealth.
in practice, in Socialist countries the Truly Rich, stay Truly Rich. The Middle Class stay there and the Poor, stay poor. Its capitalism where the opportunity for Income mobility and the "American Dream" exist.
If you have a net worth of $100,000 and give 1% to charity, you have $99,000 left. If your net worth is $50,000,000 and you give 25% to charity, you have $37,500,000 left. Who could afford to give the higher percent of their net worth to charity?
The End of Prosperity.
The real end of prosperity is our current economy that Bush & his bogus trickle down economics and deficit spending have created today. McCain offers more of the same. Obama offers a different path. If you make more than 250K vote for McCain. you have probably been living large over the last 8 years. I can't fault you for wanting more of the same. If you make less than 250K and you vote McCain then you are voting on something else besides your wallet. If that is the reason you think you are voting for McCain then you have bought in to the BS fear mongering that got W elected twice.
Anonymous 12:21,
Obama wasn't wealthy? Is that why he purchased a new home in Chicago for $1.65 million ($300,000 below the asking price) on the same day that Rita Rezko, purchased the adjoining empty lot from the same sellers for the full asking price.
He wasn't wealthy, just was able to purchase a $1.65MM home.
John McCain's tax plan is new age Feudalism, giving money to the "elite" (Lords) and HOPING it will get passed down to the middle class (peasants). After all for those of us who study History Feudalism was great wasn't it? All it took to get rid of it then was Revolution. Remember this Country was founded on the principle that the money should go to the people.
Stuart,
you sound just like Mc"Ins"ain. You guys always come on here and bash Obama. He has too much money, he only donates %5 to charity, he's doing this, he's going to do that.
That is exactly the reason he is behind, because he and the rest of the Republicans don't haven't anything to say about what he is going to do for the middle class. All you guys do is attack. What is McCain going to do to help the middle class? 4 days until election and I still don't know.
Hey Train...At least you're not arrogant and pompous right?...Go Obama!
30 minute infomercials ?! Obama's arrogance will cost him this election....mark this post !!!
and if he cuts the Military by 25% as Liberals in Congress are proposing, we will fold like a tent.
Well considering Iraq takes up well more than 25% of the military budget and the plan is to leave there, I'd say a 25% cut is very modest. We should probably be cutting a lot more than 25% since we really don't have the money to spend.
This is where a TRUE conservative departs from a NEO-conservative. The neo-conservative wants to see the government spend MORE no matter what the circumstances.
Anonymous 1:01,
McCain wants to give $5000 to every family, $2500 to individuals, so they can buy health insurance. He also talked about helping people with their mortgages. Palin wants to give $15,000 a year to special needs kids.
Anonymous 1:19,
"Obama's arrogance will cost him this election....mark this post !!!" Yeah, sounds awfully arrogant.
Obama haters on here are just down right "hilarious". People get over it and come up with some real ideas to argue about.....Oh you can't cause McCain has none!
Obama you just keep doing what you doing and beat McCain by a landslid.
McCain wants to give $5000 to every family, $2500 to individuals, so they can buy health insurance.
A fat lot of good that will do when your company cuts its insurance benefit.
My wife is a Type 1 diabetic, meaning no private insurer would EVER cover her for a mere $2500 per year. McCain's plan would give her employer the option of cutting her off from coverage, eventually causing her to suffer (and possibly die) from untreated complications.
Anonymous 1:01
How am I bashing Obama? Another ignorant poster was claiming that McCain is extremely wealthy and Obama is poor, when the latter is completely false.
You Kool-Aid drinkers (both McCain and Obama supporters) who refuse to find facts on your own supports my claim that all people shouldn't be allowed to vote, because you all don't take it seriously. That also goes to all the people who vote straight ticket without doing a bit of research.
I don’t care who you vote for (or if you vote straight ticket), just have some sense to know why you are voting for or against someone.
Republicans are math deficient. Statements like "if I make over $250K, I'll only take home half that" show their lack of knowledge on the tax code or Obama's plan. That is a 3% rate increase on the income over $250K. Or we can let Exxon keep an even greater percetage of their $14.8 Billion profit like McCain wants. Now look at this sobering fact. Exxon could pay 100% tax and that would only pay for 38 days in Iraq. That's right. It costs us $300 million a day in Iraq. $12 billion a month. The answer is leave Iraq folks.
Iraq is paid for supplementally, the Military budget is completely seperate from it.
