Barack Obama's campaign has been billing his speech later today in Canton, Ohio, as a "closing argument" to the American people.
If excerpts sent from the campaign this morning are any guide, there's a little - but not much - that voters haven't already heard. Obama notes, once more, how McCain's tax plan benefits the wealthy, how McCain shares George Bush's economic policies and philosophies, and how Obama's own proposals will result in tax cuts for Americans making less than $250,000.
Of note: Obama nods to McCain's recent warnings about big-government Democrats running Washington. Says Obama:
Understand, if we want get through this crisis, we need to get beyond the old ideological debates and divides between left and right. We don’t need bigger government or smaller government. We need a better government – a more competent government – a government that upholds the values we hold in common as Americans. So where are those Obama sum-it-up moments? A couple of places:
In one week, you can turn the page on policies that have put the greed and irresponsibility of Wall Street before the hard work and sacrifice of folks on Main Street. And this, which Republicans surely will attack as a "redistribution of wealth" promise:
In one week, you can choose policies that invest in our middle-class, create new jobs, and grow this economy from the bottom-up so that everyone has a chance to succeed; from the CEO to the secretary and the janitor; from the factory owner to the men and women who work on its floor.
In one week, you can put an end to the politics that would divide a nation just to win an election; that tries to pit region against region, city against town, Republican against Democrat; that asks us to fear at a time when we need hope.
In one week, at this defining moment in history, you can give this country the change we need.
What we have lost in these last eight years cannot be measured by lost wages or bigger trade deficits alone. What has also been lost is the idea that in this American story, each of us has a role to play. Each of us has a responsibility to work hard and look after ourselves and our families, and each of us has a responsibility to our fellow citizens. That’s what’s been lost these last eight years – our sense of common purpose; of higher purpose. And that’s what we need to restore right now.Tell us what you think. We'll have details from McCain's economic speech shortly.

I am going to endorse Mr. Obama. And not just to preserve my viability on the Washington cocktail circuit, either. Don't be fooled by that false claim!
Pelosi and Reid are scarier than Obama. Their proposals are the worst what can happen to economy. Just remember that Nancy doesn't consider natural gas a fossil fuel and Reid says paying taxes is voluntary.
My family and friends have already voted for Obama, the 2 hour wait was worth it. Its time for the change we need, and Obama represents that change.
"...and each of us has a responsibility to our fellow citizens."
Uh oh
Hey Republicans...."na na na na...na na na na...hey hey hey...goodbye!"
Love it!!! Go Obama
If you see someone drowning, what do you do? Do you look around and wait for someone else to save them or do you jump in? As human beings, we all have a responsibility to help one another. The "me first" mentality is what's destoying this nation and world. This is not a socialist ideal, it's an ethical ideal. What would Jesus do? Keep walking?
Anonymous left out, "Each of us has a responsibility to work hard and look after ourselves and our families..." He tries hard to find fault. But I have no problem with the rest of the sentence, "...and each of us has a responsibility to our fellow citizens."
We do need to come together. It's a shame that many Republicans will sabotage our potential rather than give Obama a chance.
And you will be forced to "spread your wealth" if all these liberals get into office. And it's not only rich people who get to pay. Like it or not, Big Brother is coming.
His closing arguments won't win me at this point. I was undecided, but it seems that he really does want to 'redistribute my wealth' and I'm well under his $250k mark, but in light of the economy I don't think he can actually put his plan into action and still restore some economic stability. And after some due diligence I have found that it is in fact policies from the Clinton Administration that helped land America in this economic hotspot we're in. Not good. Sorry, Dems, you lost this one.
I "hope" that this economy get a "change". I hope someone will look after me. I need a change in my life......
Wake up America. If you want a change of your life YOU make it stop hoping someone will do it for you. Get up OFF YOUR BUTT and change it. Nobody is stopping you but you and then when you have to pay the taxes of your employees and every other tax Democrats propose you will find out when you are laid off that you voted for Obama and MAN You got Change. Remember 1976 and The Carter years that was for Change too......
So if you are not in favor of "spreading the wealth" then you must be opposed to the mortgage interest deduction, eh? I mean, giving a tax break for mortgage interest is taking from one taxpayer to give a break to another isn't it?
Anon 1:07 pm - if you live in Meck Co/city of Charlotte, your mortgage interest deduction is nowhere close to what you pay in property taxes, so no it isn't.
I presume you rent (which I did for years until I could afford to own and pay a mortgage)...otherwise I doubt you'd feel that way.
Raising Taxes on the super rich is only a part of more taxes. What about the probability that Obama will sonner than later raise our property taxes, sales tax, vehicle tax, inheritance tax, etc. This pulls more money out of all of our pockets. How does this "change" help us economically?
WWII brought us out of the Depression, not New Deal policies. What we need now is another major war to unite the country, and inject some money and energy (think: job creation) into the military manufacturing sector. I'm voting for McCain. It's time to take the fight to those that would destroy us. BUsh hasn't been able to fiollow through.
A. 1:16 - you forgot Capital Gains tax - have you seen his plan for that increase. That means, your house, your stock proceeds, etc. And his plans for the 'estate tax' is ridiculous. God forbid your loved ones work hard all their life, when they die under his plan, government takes a huge chunk (which could pay for heirs to go to college, start a life, give to charities of their choosing, pay taxes, etc.)
Obama really is all for redistribution and that is completely unfair to those who work hard their entire life to succeed. Why should I have to pay for the mistakes of others? I studied hard, applied myself, worked throughout high school and college to pay for my education. And now because I am successful, I have to help pay for it in a different way though his redistrubtion of wealth. Uh-uh. Nope, not interested.
To themessenger:
Can you not help better by helping someone directly instead of sending more of your paycheck to Washington? And the "me first" mentality shouldnt be mistaken for individuals right to his pursuit of happiness. If all individuals are free to pursue their dreams, then the whole is served best.
"Dewey Defeats Truman"
For those of you who are unfamiliar with history, No he didn't. More recently:
"Exit Polls Show Win For Kerry"
Wrong again, wait till next week and remember, "never count your chickens before they hatch".
What would Jesus do? Keep walking?
No I believe jesus would tell him to be strong believe in me and you can achieve anything, go forth and prosper or something along those lines. I don't think he'd say go live off that guy over there cuz he's got alittle more than you so you can do nothing and live for free either! I think the rich give plenty to charities & do their fair share of spreading the wealth around all on their own.I'd rather them give it to charties then to trust big bro.to spread it around!
