Obama/Ayers - an examination

Bloggers and John McCain supporters have lamented a lack of media attention on the relationship between Barack Obama and 1960s radical Bill Ayers, who shares a Chicago neighborhood with the Democratic candidate for president.

Today, a New York Times story examines the crossed paths of Obama and Ayers, who helped found the Weathermen, a group responsible for domestic bombings in the 1960s and 1970s, including one that killed a San Francisco police officer in 1970.

The summary paragraph:

A review of records of the schools project and interviews with a dozen people who know both men, suggest that Mr. Obama, 47, has played down his contacts with Mr. Ayers, 63. But the two men do not appear to have been close.
The Times reports that although the two have not spoken in years, they did occasionally have contact earlier, including "a coffee Mr. Ayers hosted for Mr. Obama’s first run for office, on a schools project and a charitable board, and in casual encounters as Hyde Park neighbors." Contrary to reports from bloggers, the Times says that Ayers did not engineer Obama's election 13 years ago to a charitable board that distributed grants in the Chicago area as part of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

There will be some who dismiss the NYT piece, citing the source. But the newspaper has historically been nonpartisan in its watchdog reporting, and this report is a useful look at the Ayers-Obama relationship. Look for more reporting, from varied outlets, to come as a result of CAC archives at the University of Illinois being opened to researchers recently. (For a different perspective on Ayers and Obama, read Stanley Kurtz of the National Review Online.)

Look also for the McCain campaign to point to the relationship as part of a last-month heightening of attention on Obama's seeming "riskiness" for office. The Washington Post is reporting today that the campaign will attempt to shift the national conversation from the economy "back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations, several top Republicans said."

The strategy is likely a necessary one, as the McCain camp has been unable to escape the drag the economy has had on his support. The campaign gave an advance look of that October strategy at Thursday's VP debate, where Sarah Palin emphasized Obama's vote to not fund U.S. troops in Iraq and his remarks about U.S. troops bombing Afghan civilians. Later, Palin said those Obama remarks "disqualify someone from consideration as the next commander in chief." (The Obama camp has noted that McCain similarly has not supported a troop-funding bill that carried a timeline for withdrawal )

Obama spokesman Bill Burton responded to the Washington Post story with a statement emailed to reporters this morning:

"We understand that it’s not easy for John McCain to defend the worst economic record of our lifetime, but he will have to explain to the people struggling to pay their bills and stay in their homes why he would rather spend his time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy.”

(Update: 4:20 p.m.: On cue, Palin talked of Obama and Ayers today at Colorado fundraiser. Said Palin of Obama: "This is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to pal around with terrorists who targeted their own country.")

New York times is not bipartisan, so they will have their spin on this issue. It has not been "years" as stated which sounds like many years but "years" meaning in the last 2 years that obama and ayers were together. It is clear that abama's judgment on who he associates with, only shows who he truly is. I guess no one parents told them that your friends are a reflection of you. Sorry, would not believe anything from the NY Times.

What about McCain's judgement in picking Palin?

This is exactly what the Democrats need. If McCain goes on some wild attack of Obama for the last month of the campaign, it will effectively knock him out of the race. I think every media outlet agrees this race will be decided by undecided and independent voters. By attacking Obama, he is just going to reinforce the ideas that many conservatives already hold true about Obama, and he is going to do nothing for those independents and undecided voters who are looking for clear answers to get this country back on track. When McCain loses this election, I think the blame will fall directly on the shoulders of his campaign team and the numerous mistakes they have made thru the course of this election ( Hiding Sarah Palin from the Media, Pulling out of Michigan Prematurely, and the numerous ties to lobbyist that leaves Americans wondering, Who is McCain really fighting for?)

Finish the story, Anthony - McCain was cleared of wrongdoing in the Keating Five investigation. Obama has yet to be examined or critiqued in such a way. So much for blind Obama followers...try to stop drinking the koolaid.

Seriously, why don't you come out and admit that you are a McCain supporter.

This is absolute trash. You want to talk about dirty links with the candidates I will be happy to because the GOP and McCain have a long list of bedfellows that is exquisitely embarrassing.
Keep in mind, Wall Street is a republican haven.
The GOP is tarnished by the likes of Larry Craig, Tom delay, Trent Lot and Rev. (oops) Haggerty.

McCain strongly lobbied for the support of Rev Hagee who condemns Catholics.

McCain was part of Keating Five that aided the S&L scandal in the late 80's.

He also has a womenizing past and left his disfigured wife because he has a thing for lookers.

We can go all day and that is without even bringing up Sarah Palin which we would need a whole month to discuss.

You seriously suggest reading the "National Review" to get counterpoint? I now know you're Republican (or an independent in denial). "National Review" is to the right what "The Nation" is to the left.

If bill ayers was responsible for forming the terrorist group that killed a police officer in 1970, then why is he not in jail for the rest of his life?

“Whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization,” Steve Schmidt of the McCain campaign said.

Good luck trying to distract the American people from the tanking economy. This story is a bunch of hockey puck-every pun intended!

What's the difference between associating with someone like Rev. Wright or William Ayers and an association with someone like David Duke?

Bill Clinton couldn't even answer that, I imagine this will be a question asked soon and should've been a long time ago by MSM. Had they done their job, Hillary would be nominee and up double digits on McCain

Try to find anyone at this DNCharlotte Observer that isn't a Democrat. They are just absolutely pathetic. "Journalism" is dead. This is nothing but a propaganda outfit.

Sorry Laura but there is no comparison between Palin and Ayers or obama. Palin is the only one with character and the other 2 plus all of the other obama friends who have no character. Not sure of the trash that you think you know on Palin. Ayers was convicted by the way, he and his wife. Yes, so it is a fact that he is guilty. and yes obama had nothing to do with the bombings or the killings with his association with people of this type, mentor was in the communist party (Marshall), his minister of over 20plus years (in fact his only christan minister) and his wife Michelle. (please read her college thesis) Sorry, I don't believe anyone should be racist, including Michelle obama. Oh, there are many more associates of obama's Alinsky, Rezko, and more. Research, they were not just acquaintances. You might want to google the gay choir director that was murdered at obama's church as well , while you are at it. Very interesting character, I might add. Hope this is not a reflection of the obama supporters.

Stanley Kurtz said...

Stanley Kurtz responds to NYT's:

As others have noted, today’s New York Times carries a story on the relationship between Barack Obama and unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist, Bill Ayers. The piece serves as a platform for the Obama campaign and Obama’s friends and allies. Obama’s spokesman and supporters’ names are named and their versions of events are presented in detail, with quotes. Yet the article makes no serious attempt to present the views of Obama critics who have worked to uncover the true nature of the relationship. That makes this piece irresponsible journalism, and an obvious effort by the former paper of record to protect Obama from the coming McCain onslaught.

The title of the article when it first appeared on the web last night was, "Obama Had Met Ayers, but the Two Are Not Close." That was quickly changed to, "Obama and the ‘60's Bomber: A Look Into Crossed Paths." Perhaps the first headline made the paper’s agenda a bit too obvious. Even so, the new title simply parrots the line of Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt that the two first met through an early "education project" and since have simply "encountered each other occasionally in public life or in the neighborhood." Or, as New York Times reporter Scott Shane puts it at the head of his article, since an initial lunchtime meeting in 1995, "their paths have crossed sporadically...at a coffee Mr. Ayers hosted for Mr. Obama’s first run for office, on the schools project (i.e. the Chicago Annenberg Challenge) and a charitable board, and in casual encounters as Hyde Park neighbors."

There is nothing "sporadic" about Barack Obama delivering hundreds of thousands of dollars over a period of many years to fund Bill Ayers’ radical education projects, not to mention many millions more to benefit Ayers’ radical education allies. We are talking about a substantial and lengthy working relationship here, one that does not depend on the quality of personal friendship or number of hours spent in the same room together (although the article greatly underestimates that as well).

Shane’s article buys the spin on Ayers’ supposed rehabilitation offered by the Obama campaign and Ayers’ supporters in Chicago. In this view, whatever Ayers did in the 1960's has somehow been redeemed by Ayers’ later turn to education work. As the Times quotes Mayor Daley saying, "People make mistakes. You judge a person by his whole life." The trouble with this is that Ayers doesn’t view his terrorism as a mistake. How can he be forgiven when he’s not repentant? Nor does Ayers see his education work as a repudiation of his early radicalism. On the contrary, Ayers sees his education work as carrying on his radicalism in a new guise. The point of Ayers’ education theory is that the United States is a fundamentally racist and oppressive nation. Students, Ayers believes, ought to be encouraged to resist this oppression. Obama was funding Ayers’ "small schools" project, built around this philosophy. Ayers’ radicalism isn’t something in the past. It’s something to which Obama gave moral and financial support as an adult. So when Shane says that Obama has never expressed sympathy for Ayers’ radicalism, he’s flat wrong. Obama’s funded it.

Obama was perfectly aware of Ayers’ radical views, since he read and publically endorsed, without qualification, Ayers’ book on juvenile crime. That book is quite radical, expressing doubts about whether we ought to have a prison system at all, comparing America to South Africa’s apartheid system, and contemptuously dismissing the idea of the United States as a kind or just country. Shane mentions the book endorsement, yet says nothing about the book’s actual content. Nor does Shane mention the panel about Ayers’ book, on which Obama spoke as part of a joint Ayers-Obama effort to sink the 1998 Illinois juvenile crime bill. Again, we have unmistakable evidence of a substantial political working relationship. (I’ve described it in detail here in "Barack Obama’s Lost Years."

The Times article purports to resolve the matter of Ayers’ possible involvement in Obama’s choice to head the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, yet in no way does so. Clearly, the article sides with those who claim that Ayers was not involved. Yet the piece has no credibility because it simply refuses to present the arguments of those who say that Ayers almost surely had a significant role in Obama’s final choice.

Steve Diamond has made a powerful case that, whoever first suggested Obama’s name, Ayers must surely have had a major role in his final selection. Diamond has now revealed that the Times consulted him extensively for this article and has seen his important documentary evidence. Yet we get no inkling in the piece of Diamond’s key points, or the documents that back it up. (I’ve made a similar argument myself, based largely on my viewing of many of the same documents presented by Diamond.) How can an article that gives only one side of the story be fair? Instead of offering both sides of the argument and letting readers decide, the Times simply spoon-feeds its readers the Obama camp line.

The Times also ignores the fact that I’ve published a detailed statement from the Obama camp on the relationship between Ayers and Obama at the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. (See "Obama’s Challenge.") Maybe that’s because attention to that statement would force them to acknowledge and report on my detailed reply.

Shane’s story also omits any mention of the fact that access to the Chicago Annenberg Challenge records was blocked. What’s more, thanks to a University of Chicago law student’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, we now know that access to the documents was blocked by an old Obama associate, Ken Rolling, on the day I first tried to see them. And as a result of my own FOIA, we also have evidence that Rolling may have been less than fully forthcoming on the question of Ayers’ possible role in elevating Obama to board chair at Anneberg. In fact, Rolling seems to have been withholding information from a New York Times reporter. I’ve made this material public in a piece called, "Founding Brothers." How could a responsible article on the topic of Obama, Ayers, and the Chicago Annenberg Challenge ignore the story of the blocked library access and the results of the two FOIA requests? How could a responsible paper fail to aggressively follow up on the questions raised by those requests, and by the documents and analysis presented by Steve Diamond?

Most remarkably of all, Shane seems to paper over the results of his own questioning. On the one hand, toward the end of the piece we read: "Since 2002, there is little public evidence of their relationship." And it’s no wonder, says Shane, since Ayers was caught expressing no regret for his own past terrorism in an article published on September 11, 2001. Yet earlier in Shane’s article we learn that, according to Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt, Obama and Ayers "have not spoken by phone or exchanged e-mail messages since Mr. Obama began serving in the United States Senate in January 2005." Very interesting. Obama’s own spokesman has just left open the possibility that there has indeed been phone and e-mail contact between the two men between 2002 and 2004, well after Ayers’ infamous conduct on 9/11. Yet instead of pursuing this opening, Shane ignores the findings of his own investigation and covers for Obama.

The New York Times in the tank for Obama? You bet. And sinking deeper every day.

"Two words for McCain Supporters: Keating Five"

First of all, McCain was cleared of any wrong-doings but did get a slap on the had for poor judgement. Secondly, being associated with a known terrorists who bombed his own country isn't any close to being the same as being involved in some shady financial dealings!

No matter how "close" of a friend Ayers is to Obama, he still is an associate that Obama had ties to for years. Hell, Obama even went over to Ayers house "at the request of a senator"! Would you go over to a known terrorists house regardless of who requested you? Like everyone keeps saying, you associate yourself with people that you admire and want to be like. It's pretty clear cut what kind of person and morals Obama really has!

I think its HILARIOUS to see people in this chatter slam the Times as an unreliable journalistic source and then refer people to Youtube.com!!!

Here's a fun quote: " The premise of any smear campaign rests on a central truth of politics: Most of us will vote for a candidate we like and respect, even if we don't agree with him on every issue. But if you can cripple a voter's basic trust in a candidate, you can probably turn his vote. The idea is to find some piece of personal information that is tawdry enough to raise doubts, repelling a candidate's natural supporters. [...]

It's not necessary, however, for a smear to be true to be effective. The most effective smears are based on a kernel of truth and applied in a way that exploits a candidate's political weakness."

Thats Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager. So lets not pretend to be blindsided with what's going to be coming from the right in the final month.

In a speech today, Palin, using the information she got from the this NY Times article, said Ayers and Obama were "palling around" . If you read the article you know this wasn't said or implied. Palin lied. The McCain and the Republican party are about to get really negative. So much for McCain's "honor."

When Obama met Ayers he was an Education professor, not a terrorist. When Ayers was involved with the Weathermen, Obama was eight years old. Obama said he detested what Ayers did. He didn't "pal around" with him anymore than Bush pals around with Putin.

By the way, neither Ayers nor McCain were convicted. Doesn't mean they are innocent.

McCain has showed his Patriotism in the service. No one can argue that McCain will not do anything to put our country in jepardy. Obama's past has no indication that he has an ounce of Patriotism. When the votes are in and whoever wins, I will be very hopeful that our next President will take our country into the right direction. I will hope our next President will have a true love of our country and make sure Americans are safe from any acts of terrorism. I will hope our next President will have the background that shows his interest lie only with America's Freedom and Democracy. Look at these two men for who they are truly, not for an American Idol contest! Think about who will take on the power of the free world in the RIGHT direction.

Palin's statement today is beyond outrageous and shows not only her lack of integrity but how McCain has traded what honor he had in for gutter attacks. Most McCain TV ads have had to be pulled by TV stations all over the country because the content was a lie. TV stations legally cannot run any ad again once it has been found to be false. That's why you never see many of McCain's TV ads. Like his speeches, they are complete lies. Palin told so many lies during the VP debate there were story after story reporting the fact check truth and they all said the questionable statements she made were "false". I believe the office of President should occupied with someone of intelligent, integrity, and honor. This disqualifies McCain and the corrupt Palin. Liars always get caught. It's why McCain and Palin are being called out by every major newspaper and magazine for their lies and sleezy attacks on Obama. Intelligent voters already know McCain and Palin are unfit for office. The undecideds will be disgusted with the negative, ridiculous, and disgraceful actions of the McCain campaign and will vote for Obama. McCain and Palin are very sad, desperate candidates who know they are losing and have stooped to the lowest level of dirty politics. if they cannot talk about the issues, and they have shown they can't, then they should shut up and accept their defeat. People who will say and do anything to get what they want are the real danger to our nation. McCain and Palin are dangerous and dishonorable. They are arrogant and disgraceful liars and the media should stop covering them completely because of it.

The only place you will hear Palin's false attack in any context except, "SHE IS TELLING A WHOPPER" is on Fox. They quote her verbatim, on the hour.

Obama rejected Ayers behavior years ago.
Ayers is now a respected Doctor of Education and influential in education in Chicago. He wrote a grant that won Chicago $49 million. Being on a board of a charity with him 40 years after his run-in with the law, (WHEN OBAMA WAS 8 YRS OLD), is not a problem except to fanatics. Fanatics are just going to vote for Palin anyway. The few people who are still undecided wont be swayed by repetition of old lies about Obama. They know he is not a muslim and not a terrorist sympathizer. He is a humane and wise person, with real solutions for our many problems facing this country, and will put people back to work, rebuilding America's infrastructure. People want solutions.

And by the way Marshall was his mentor as told by obama himself who was a member of the US communist party. Maybe this is where he gets his ideas about running our country.

Sorry, I should have given you the full name of Frank Marshall Davis, obama's mentor and who was a member of the communist party just in case you wanted to google. You might want to also google the socialist bail out bill to give 920Billion for the global poverty act which should support and ship 920 billion to other countries to assist in poverty. This is a bill presented by obama, and someone I do not see this helping the "middle class americans", I see this as an expense to the middle class americans. Other countries have a lot of our jobs so now we need to feed and house them. Somehow, I simply cannot relate to this thinking or judgment when so many americans are really hurting right now. I am sorry, but I do not support someone with a socialist mindset.

It appears that is where he is getting alot of his socialist ideas. Do you like your freedom? Hope not, if you are supporting obama. He has already shown that will be the last thing he fights for.

Great Play the Game Guilt by Associations!!! What goes around comes around!
Begala raises McCain associations

And I think Governor Palin here is making a strategic mistake. This guilt by association path is going to be trouble ultimately for the McCain campaign. You know, you can go back, I have written a book about McCain, I had a dozen researchers go through him, I didn’t even put this in the book. But John McCain sat on the board of a very right-wing organization, it was the U.S. Council for World Freedom, it was chaired by a guy named John Singlaub, who wound up involved in the Iran contra scandal. It was an ultra conservative, right-wing group. The Anti-Defamation League, in 1981 when McCain was on the board, said this about this organization. It was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League – the parent organization – which ADL said “has increasingly become a gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and anti-Semites.”

Now, that's not John McCain, I don't think he is that. But you know, the problem is that a lot of people know John McCain’s record better than Governor Palin. And he does not want to play guilt by association or this thing could blow up in his face.

Terrorists, Secessionists, Sarah Palin and Guilt by Association
What about Palin's guilt by associatiion? Her husband (and perhaps her) have been a part of an organization in Alaska that preaches secession from the USA. They are not all that nice.

To the person who thinks Palin is the only one who has character. Let me be frank! That is an ignorant thing to say! Can you even read! Character! Do you know what the word mean. So I guess this is why Palin is being investigate for ethics violation while in office as Governor of Alaska. ! McCain loves the ignorant! just ask Palin.

How does one remember the Keating 5and the REPUBLICANS? The other four were Democrats. You people will say anything. Just like this time, all the Fannie Mae bigshots, Democrats.

Again, the fact that this guy is a respected professor at a university is kinda the point. Do you have any idea, what his present ideas are? Not very mainstream, and never will be, unless we have an Obama administration.

Timothy McVeigh, had he gotten off for FBI misconduct, would have never been accepted back into decent society. An unrepentant Weather Man should be no more able to accomplish that, but since he is a hero of the left there he is. Seven years at a minimum, career launching sponsor. Wait until the Rezko stuff starts.

Hard to believe that Republicans still insist there's a "liberal media bias".

Yesterday morning, Palin shocked everyone by essentially saying that Obama is a terrorist sympathizer. The speech was analyzed as an unexpected ambush (or an outright smear, depending on who's doing the spin).

Less than 12 hours later, during Sunday evening primetime, FOX News broadcast an hour-long special hosted by Sean Hannity examining -- surprise! -- Obama's "terrorist connections". It was the kind of polished, heavily-edited piece that takes at least a week to produce. Even the most gullible hardliner couldn't deny that the messages were seamlessly coordinated.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is media collaboration of the first order.
