The Obama ad Democrats have waited for...

Since the August day John McCain chose Sarah Palin to be his running mate, Democrats have urged/demanded/begged the Obama campaign to go after the Alaska gov.

But aside from a biting quote - quickly retracted - the day Palin was picked, the campaign has largely decided on a different course - let Palin disqualify herself. (If your perspective is Republican, you'd suggest the strategy was more "let the media disqualify her.")

Today, a slight but significant change.

An ad released this morning features three John McCain quotes, put to music with no voiceover: 'I’m going to be honest: I know a lot less about economics than I do about military and foreign policy issues. I still need to be educated.' Wall Street Journal, 11/26/05. 'The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should.' Boston Globe Political Intelligence, 12/18/07. 'I might have to rely on a vice president that I select” for expertise on economic issues.' GOP Debate, 11/28/07.

The words "His choice?" appear, then...

Palin winks.

The campaign says the ad will run in key states across the country. The McCain camp responds (to Time's Mark Halperin): “When Barack Obama ignores Governor Palin's expertise with energy, a principle economic challenge of our generation, it proves why he can't be trusted to deliver energy independence or get this economy back on track.”

A VP attack ad on the second to last day of October? No, this isn't your typical election.

Tell us what you think. Also, are you an undecided voter? We'd love to talk to you. Email Observer reporter Jim Morrill here.

I think it's about time he goes after Palin. They have done nothing but attack and McCain has hid "behind her skirts" for weeks, letting her do the dirty work.

What rock have you been hiding under. From the beginning the Democrats have been spending a dis-proporionate amount of bile on Sarah Palin. And the left media (talk about redundant) prefers to check out the cost of her high heels rather than to find out if there's anything to this Rezko, Ayers, Wright thing.

The words and the choice of VP speak for themselves.
Entirely appropriate and thought-provoking especially since Mr. McCain is 72 and has had 2-3 occurrences of Stage IIb-III Metastatic Melanoma, one of the most virulent types of cancer.
The commercial lets one draw his own conclusion.

I don't know if it was wise. Now the McCain camp will be saying Obama is sexist. After that, they will say that his Great-great-great-great-great Grandfather was a slave-owner, and he should not be trusted because he might re-establish slavery with the country's money.
All Palin knows how to do is attack, because she has no clue of anything else aside from knowing that Russians fly over her house. So don't go down her path. The Obama camp should blaze down thier leading trail, and protect the lead that they already have.

Can Palin even do an interview alone besides on FOX News with Hannity? Why is McCain always with Palin during her interviews?

It's a nice ad with pleasant, happy music. It never said Palin wouldn't give McCain good economic advice, it lets the viewers of the ad decide.

Anonymous said...

That's right - Palin has had a free pass all this time until now. No, wait - that was Biden.

So now let's do an ad using all the snips of Biden's foot-in-mouth statements. That would be good, too.
And let's have someone hang a mannequin of him and Obama up by a noose and see how funny that is.

Hasn't served one term in the Senate seat provides expertise over Palin? Wait, Palin isn't running for President! Obama is! And if voters are to take the things McCain said literally, than we should all take what Obama has said about the controversial figures he has aligned himself with in the past.

Another point, President signs bills and is a foreign policy maker, he doesn't run the economy. heck, even doesn't even create bills! He may request a specific type of bill, but thats it! If any part of the gov't runs the economy its the House/Senate and who has been running that for two years? Yup, Dems! And when did everything start going downhill? Since the Dems took power! Change can only be to remove the Dem's from power. Besides, they have a lower rating than Bush! Why give the Dem's all three level's of the gov't!!

Pete? Are you sure you aren't part of Obama's Public Relations committee? Why do you think announcing a candidate's new ad is news worth? It would be great if you could report on something we can't learn by sitting in front of a TV. Why don't you dig into some of the stories that people are REALLY discussing around the water cooler... Like is there anything to all these stories linking Obama to shady characters?

They never went after Palin? Come on. A piece from Philadephia Inq by Helen McCaffrey about loving and open-minded Democrats

"The hatred escalated to performers advocating Palin be "gang raped," to suggestions that her husband had had sex with their young daughters (SNL), and reports that her Down syndrome child really was that of her teenage daughter. One columnist even called for her to submit to DNA testing to prove her virtue. Smells a little like Salem to me. I was present at an Obama rally at which the mention of Palin's name drew shouts of "stone her."

"Stone her"? How biblical."

I can not believe that there are many people out there that have not made up their mind on which candidate they will vote for. The ad will be good fodder for the pundits that is about it.

Mediocrity and irrationality? Just curious how mediocre and irrational person was able to become a governor without having family member already in Alaska govt (apparently that's a norm there) and beating fair and square all seasoned players? Since the comments on this one go all over the board, I'll put my one cents worth in. I think it's funny when people blame the media on election coverage saying it favors Obama. lol, Watch Fox news and see who they favor. I actually think this blog has been one of the most fair and balanced coverage anywhere. I do get a laugh out of some of the comments, especially ones that still try to bring the lie about Obama taking his Oath of office on the Koran or the ones that still say he isn't qualified to run because he wasn't born in the United States. lol, Didn't know Hawaii wasn't a state. When a campaign is scared that they are going to get blown away they bring this out, thinking voters are dumb enough to believe it.

So can the GOP and its supporters please stop banging on about ACORN because there is nothing going on there. In fact please keep speaking about it because it just makes your party looks bad and will help Obama more.

I hope the run an ad with her telling the New Yorker that she's proud her state "spreads the wealth" by sharing corporate oil profits with the residents of Alaska.

Hypocrite is right -- all wrapped up in $6000 jackets.

Just call her Snowjob Squareglasses.

Also, can someone tell me why McCain is talking about "Executive Experience"? He has none and Palin's 14 months as governor of state smaller than Charlotte is pretty weak.

Finally, McCain's ad about picking someone who can handle crisis? Is he kidding? I hope people will remember McCain during the economic meltdown running around like a chicken with its head chopped off. Real leadership.

Anonymous said...

I said I would wait until he picked his VP to decide - and I was shocked. She is no more ready to run this country than I am and that says more about his judgment than anything else. Then I looked at the issues and tax plans and heard McCain speak about defense and little else. Then his character tanked with the economy as he has shown know understanding of how middle America has been struggling for awhile. Otherwise his wife would not have worn $300,000 worth of clothes and jewelery at the convention while CEO's encourged more Bush tax cuts.

Anonymous said...

The irrationality and mediocrity...aka willful and obstinate ignorance, I am talking about is that Sarah Palin is a religious fundamentalist who lives in a insular world based on supernatural fantasies.

One example is that she had a minister pray over her to protect her from the influence of witches.

Someone who bases their judgement on the subjective interpretations of fanatical and delusional ideas of religious fundamentalism is in no way qualified to be a national leader of this or any other country.

If the citizens of Alaska were foolish enough to elect someone like her that is their fault. The rest of us don't have to make the same error.

Anonymous said...

What I find frightening about Republicans who whine about negative press is that they ignore the fact that Palin is dumber than dirt and McCain acted like an fool during the economic crisis.

Add to this the lies they keep getting caught telling (the Bridge to Nowhere, Obama's tax plan), the double standards (pregnant daughter, $150,000 wardrobes, Palin "spreading the wealth in Alaska) and rabid followers who believe Right-wing lies and you get a campaign that deserves negative press.

Ayers and Wright aren't running for an office that puts them a heart beat away from the Presidency. Since no one else vetted the bubble head why shouldn't the media. That's their job when the Presidential candidate abdicates his responsibility.

"Where were you Dems when Hillary was wearing 6000.00 custom made suits."

Even if she purchased $6000 pantsuits (which I doubt), these are purchased by the candidate not the political party trying to cram down everyone's throat that Palin is "just like the average person".

"Also the Repblicans have been trying since 2005 to get a bill passed for the mortage catastropy...even the poor should have a chance at home owner ship."

Two things,

1.) the Republicans controlled the Presidency and Congress from 20001 until 2007. They could have gotten anything passed.

2.) What percentage of homes costing more than 300K are in foreclosure? Do you know? Are you under the delusion that the only homes under foreclosure are those belonging to the unemployed poor?

Like the rest of the middle and lower classes, I'm still waiting for the GOP's magical trickling down theory to trickle down on the rest of us who have been playing by the rules our whole lives.

Does it bother anyone in this country anymore that 90% of the wealth is controlled by 5% of the population (up from just 60% in the 1970's). In fact, the middle class hasn't been this small since before 1933.

What does that tell us? The GOP has successfully turned the economic clock back to pre-FDR levels when the GOP played the same record they're playing in 2008...that 90% of the wealth is controlled by 5% of the population because 95% of the population are stupid, lazy slobs who will swallow anything we tell them.

If North Carolina citizens actually allow NC to go red in favor or the mccain. palin ticket, the results will reflect just how backwood ignorant this state really is. With 16 world class universities in this state, you would think intelligence would be insulted with the mccain/palin ticket as well as the mindset. (or lack there of)

I pray that the people of NC wont allow the Republicans to sell them another lie.

mike said...

As a Liberal, I don't like negative ads at all. On the other hand, is what is portrayed a lie? Is it false? Does it somehow reinforce the notion that all women are somehow less capable or is that this woman is not capable. I don't see it. Sarah Palin has proven herself to be the perfect attack dog - throwing all caution and any semblance of fairness to the wind. She's inflamed audiences with her divisiveness. As an insult, you could have change her picture with one of Dan Quayle and made the same point.
Are we being bigots or sexist when we treat a woman or a black man differently? Was it wrong to say Dan Quayle wasn't prepared to be President because he couldn't spell potato?

This is new territory and I don't like the ad. But, it's not because she's a woman. I dislike all negative ads and don't think the Barack Hussein Obama campaign should be stooping to the McCain and Palin campaign's level. He's a greater person than that and his ideas are far stronger. Payback for Palin will come one day; we Liberals need to rise above them.

I think it's a bad idea, and unnecessary. Palin is such an obvious disaster as a VP pick that anyone who can't see that already likely isn't going to change their minds because of an ad. When members of the McCain campaign are already calling her a diva and a whack job, why say anything more? I'm not in favor of negative advertising, and I would prefer this ad didn't run.

Anonymous said...

The only comment I would make is watch Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric over and over again. If I spoke like that on my job, I would be sent for drug testing or more likely fired.

I am a Reagan Democrat and actually had an open mind about this election. The Palin selection is a joke.

Anonymous said...

Gotta hand it to them - brilliant ad. The media bombard McCain with negativity because there's very little there to be positive about, unless you're rich or a big corporation, especially an oil co.

Anonymous said...

Democrats did not take control of Congress in 2006! Congress consists of two chambers, the House and Senate. To take control, there must be a clear majority of Democrats in the Senate, of which there is not to date. Since both the House and the Senate must pass a bill (legislation), a near tie of both parties in the Senate is sufficient to ignore or halt legislation supported by the other party. As the the president of the senate, the Vice President (Cheney) also gets a vote on the Senate bills. Despite Democrats' intentions, they didn't and still don't have the numbers in Congress to change the course of the Bush-Cheney corpocratic agenda.

Anonymous said...

Wow, talk about a "mass manipulation of Society." Everyone is running scare of the idea of a black man being the President. You all refer to the backers of Sen Obama, but what about the people who said they will not vote for him because of his skin tone? Is that any reason to not vote for someone? I think Sen Obama has the best ideas and they can be workable. On the other hand McCain thinks because he comes from the "upper class" (where being in touch with the "lower class" is not within his jurisdiction) that he is entitled to be President, even if he is illiterate to the needs of the people who will suffer from his "trickle down Reganomics." I guess ignorance is one of the prerequisites for Republican candidates.

The ad makes a lot of sense, it's about time!

Anonymous said...

Palin said it her self - she is nothing more than a female dog with lipstick on. Now, what is that word for a female dog?

I'd say the Republicans are the ones who are sexist - they think they can win votes by nominating an air-headed fairly good looking female for VP so all the men will vote with their second head.

It's fortunate that Christmas always comes between the election and the inauguration....It instills some sense of goodwill to all men that seems to be forgotten by the political process preceding it....Oh, by the wy, Happy Thanksgiving!

Was Palin the best candidate for veep? No. She was the second-best. The best, of course, was Bobby Jindal, but according to all rumor, he wasn't interested.

On the other hand... Joe Biden? That's the best Obama can do? A guy who's a dinosaur of the Senate? A guy whose experience consists of being wrong on every foreign policy issue in the past three plus decades? A guy whose signature legislation was making it harder for people to declare bankruptcy so the credit card companies based in his home state could wring more cash out of their hides? A guy best known for plagiarizing speeches down to personal historical details - like being from Wales? *That*'s the best The One could do?!?!?

On that basis, I'd take McCain's judgment over Obama's every day of the week. Heck, if I agreed with Barry on every issue, the Biden selection alone would probably make me sit this one out.

The wealthy spend and invest their money. It goes to buying things and hiring people.
