Morning Buzz: It's time for predictions

Think you know more than The Ballot? (You know you do. You tell me so every day.)

Now is your opportunity to give us your political winners, instead of reading mine. Play the Observer's Political Pick 'em. Predict who will win in a half-dozen races, including U.S. president and N.C. governor, and tell us how many electoral college votes the winning presidential candidate will receive.

Here's where you play.

Yes, there are prizes:

1) Lunch with yours truly and other members of the Observer's politics team. If that's inconvenient, or if journalists disturb your appetite, we'll mail you a present.

2) A Ballot headline for one hour on the home page of CharlotteObserver.com that reads: "(Winner's name) is a political genius." Show your friends. Take a screenshot. One hour. (We have our credibility to consider.)

You can play anytime between now and Tuesday at 6 p.m.. One entry per person. And no, your picks won't be made public - unless you win.

To warm up - how about sharing some predictions right now? Who will win the presidential race - in N.C. and overall? N.C. gov?

Tell us what you think.

Your morning buzz:

Barack Obama's 30-minute infomercial airs at 8 tonight on major networks. A smart move, say political pundits, but there is a risk, Politico reports.

Both candidates would deepen the national debt if they became president, conservative and liberal analysts tell the New York Times. McCain would lead to a higher deficit, they say.

Sarah Palin will give a policy speech on energy today. The Wall Street Journal previews the content.

Politico's Roger Simon wonders why she and McCain aren't talking about guns.

Newsweek asks: What does Palin believe? A look at her faith.

If election night doesn't have the suspense you crave, Time has several House and Senate races to watch.

Slate asks: If you visit a state, will you get more votes there?

Did anybody else catch Barney Frank's announcement that Defense expenditures would be cut by 25%?

If I were the Obama campaign I would ask him to keep his mouth shut.

It's a shame that so many people have worked hard to assure people of color a chance to get ahead and get away from being bought and sold on the town square. Obama's small tax break is just setting you back a few hundred years. He's buying your votes for a measley $500 to $1500. What are you going to do the next month after that? He's taking you right back to square one. The only thing he's "changing" is the price. When the tax rate for small and large businesses goes up say 10% can you afford for your living expenses to go up the same? These companies are just going to pass this on to you and me the consumer. You'll see inflation go through the roof. Job losses and company shut down. When the job market is flooded with "worker bees" we'll have record unemployment. The odds of finding even a decent paying job go up. Please wake up now. Sherrie on "The View" says she just want to see a president who "looks like me in the White House". Unlike her, I want to have a president in the White House that thinks like me and keeps me safe, and gives me a hand up when I'm down and need it, not a hand out I don't deserve. Vote where God leads your heart. Where will the next president lead our children? Don't you want them to have the opportunity to succeed? Let's don't settle for mediocrity.

to anonymous: I think I will stay right here in NC and help pull this country back together.

What about sales tax rates, property tax rates, inheritance tax rates? Do the candidates address whether these will be increased? Thanks!

Two dogz,

If you understand economics then you would know that Obama's policies will boost our economy through several measures.

The targeted tax cut goes to disposable income of the middle class essentially guaranteeing the money goes straight back into the system creating more revenue and tax reciepts

Obama supports a second stimulus targeted for America. A proper economic stimulus is about 2-3% of GDP.

Lastly, investment in new schools, infrastructure and a new energy economy will boost jobs.

What is McCain's plan? Cut taxes on the rich which would incur an additional $5 trillion worth of debt and explode our deficit.

how do you like McCain now?

to anonymous, ok to you pro choice people out there. Exactly at what point in a womans life does she develop the right to take the life of her unborn baby's life?
Does it begin at the woman's conception? Or does she get that right at some other point in her age? I believe that life begins at conception, and that we need to protect our children any way possible from that moment until they can take care of themselves. I believe that we needed to go to war if need be to save untold lives from Saddam who had already killed very many. I think we should continue the war on terror wherever it leads us. I feel safe leaving my house now. I don't need that to CHANGE. I believe health care is a responsibility not a right. If you are destitute and in need of care now you can get it. We don't need the government to get any larger. Gays have all the rights I now have. I believe that marriage should be only between one man and one woman. These are my beliefs and I know that you agree that in America we can disagree. I get one vote just like you and I live with the outcome of the election. I have faith that most Americans think like me. I could be wrong. We'll see. Thanks for your comments too. I respect them.

Tylerkad: Businesses will not grow and create new jobs without tax breaks. In a global economy, they can easily incorporate elsewhere, still have access to our markets, and avoid our higher tax rates. As a result, growth and jobs are transferred to the country of incorporation.

Taxing big companies won't create jobs... providing cheap and free education doesn't create educated people... unless they have to keep a high GPA and graduate or pay it all back. Giving an occassional stimulus doesn't create jobs.

The stimuli you discuss... it's been shown that those types of things only work temporarily, but within a couple of months it all disappears and we're back to square one. If companies have to pay out more, they will look to cut costs. Lay-offs are great because as soon as they announce one their stocks go through the roof. Keep in mind that publically traded companies are loyal to their investors... not their employees.

McCain is not raising the company's taxes... he just isn't raising them... it's a lovely misleading statement from Obama himself.

Everyone is looking at the short-term and don't seem to realize that his plans won't work long-term.

To pro-choice... keep in mind that things are going to change soon anyway... There are legal groups out there that want to give the man that helped create the unborn child as many rights to it's existance as the woman. If they don't get that, then they will seek the right to choose if they want to participate in the child's life (if they say no, then the woman doesn't get child-support). On top of that, they are aiming to make it a requirement that the mother give the name of the father so that he can be asked if he wants to participate.

It's either that a man gets the same rights in the decision process as the woman, or the woman has to give up something.

On top of that... don't let Obama mislead you... survivors of botched abortions are not protected under the hypocratic oath. Those survivors are left to die on their own and then disposed of as hazardous waste. If a doctor actually helped one after trying to destroy it, they, and the mother, could be brought up on attempted murder charges. Those that you see today that did survive and grew up were saved by the mercy of someone who lost their job.

You also need to consider that if those survivors are protected, the whole question of when life begins comes into question, and you'll see a reversal of Roe V. Wade.

Think it through to the end. It won't be the president that changes things... it will be public policy as people start getting really loud about what is truely going on.

So glad to hear someone else say it so nicely :)

If Bush got us into that mess, then how come we don't see Congressional investigations into Fannie and Freddie? Just few months ago they were dragging all oil execs in front of cameras and hammer them on the price of gas. Now they seem awfully quiet. Is that because Dodd, Frank, Waters and others would have to investigate themselves?

We already have a free education at CMS and we also have a 35% dropout rate that comes with it. And that "free" education costs the taxpayers as much (if not more) as top private schools on per student basis

That would make sense considering we're finishing up major operations in Iraq. It would be absurd to continue spending at the same rate after we leave -- where on earth would all the money be going? A 25% decrease sounds about right.

to twodogz on the abortion issue:
Women will get abortions whether they are legal or not. No woman WANTS an abortion, but every situation is different. If you strongly believe that life begins at conception I respect that. But making abortion illegal will not stop abortions. It will just take more lives of women who seek abortions on the black market.

to Laura, I do believe that any woman who doesn't want a baby shouldn't have one. She should prevent getting pregnant. My goodness it's 2008 and there are a multitude of ways to prevent pregnancy. No law prevents all bad behavior, but stops some. Any child saved by overturning Roe vs. Wade would be well worth the effort. I think that abortion should not be used as another form of birth control by irresponsible people. If "no women want an abortion", as you put it, they should prevent pregnancy and take responsibility for the human life they and their male counterpart help create.
