Morning Buzz: Southern whites and McCain

Are Southern whites - especially men - turning toward McCain as the election draws near?

McCain's six-point gain in a Public Policy Polling survey of North Carolina yesterday came largely with the help of white male Democrats. Also yesterday, a Washington Post tracking poll noted that while whites in other parts of the country poll for Obama or even, in the South they favor McCain by a two-to-one margin.

The temptation, for some, will be to attribute the numbers solely to race, but ideology might be a bigger factor of late. McCain, in the past two weeks, has honed his economic message to this: Barack Obama wants to share the wealth by taxing some Americans more than others. Democrats (and others) will argue that any tax system is a form of wealth sharing - and that McCain himself has argued that the rich should contribute more. But McCain's message now is resonating with conservative Democrats, especially men, and those voters are moving his way here.

Is it enough to tilt N.C. toward McCain and make Virginia a tossup? Expect Obama to launch a forceful appeal to those voters' pocketbooks today in Virginia and tomorrow in Raleigh.

Tell us what you think.

Your morning buzz:

The Wall Street Journal looks at the mayors who've made it to the executive branch. There aren't many.

The Washington Post's Dana Milbanks says that sometimes, mavericks turn into divas.

A John McCain fan, Post writer Anne Appelbaum, explains why she can't give him the nod.

Another must-win for McCain, Florida, is being fiercely contested by Obama, says Politico's Jonathan Martin.

While we're being geographic, Newsweek examines why Virginia, the state that's home to McCain HQ, is in play.

Imagine the lead Obama would have if he weren't black.

Obama would still be a community organizer in Illinois if he weren't black, half-black technically.

Gallup did a poll earlier and found more people are voting for Obama simply because he's black than against him over the same reason.

his real problem is he's a Socialist, though its been covered up well

he wouldn't even be in the running if he weren't black

They're called yellow dog democrats and they're not really democrats at all. Think Joe Lieberman, only christian. They're basically traitors to their party. The ones that aren't are probably just southern white male racists (like we don't have many of those around here).

Regardless of your views on Obama, McCain, etc I hope everyone will go out and vote for Pat McCrory. Not only is he the best thing for Charlotte, but also for the state as a whole. This race has a far greater impact on our daily lives than the POTUS campaign.

Vote Pat McCrory for Governor of North Carolina

If Obama wasn't black he'd be John Edwards...and nowhere near the nomination.

You must be a racist if you think that all southern white men who do not vote for Obama is racist?

I'm a southern white male who is not voting for Obama, not because he is black (half black) but because I do not agree with his plans.

So, look at why you are voting for him before you accuse others of being racist. If you are voting for him because of his plans, more power to you. Don't vote for him because he is black.

"his real problem is he's a Socialist"

This echo of McCarthyism is the hook that white voters have now manufactured for themselves as the "policy" cover for casting their ballots against the black candidate. It doesn't matter that the charge is patently untrue. Plausible deniability all that polite modern segregationists need to believe that they sleep each night among the just.

They are not Yellow Dog Democrats. A yellow dog democrat is someone who would vote for a yellow dog rather than a Republican.

Jeez. Get a clue before you start lecturing people.

What astounds me is that these posts are discrediting his entire life's worth of accomplishments by saying he is only successful due to his race.

If that isn't blatant racism than I don't know what is.

Think, just for one second. It may help you make an INFORMED decision.

Disclaimer: I am white and from the South.

McCrory is a joke. A part time mayor that worked for Duke Energy in an unspecified job while mayor. Nothing has been accomplished under his watch except further reliance on banks for survival. Charlotte is a laughing stock outside the area. NC must do better.

Yet another not-so-subtle attempt to keep race at the forefront of the real issues in this election. Don't you people in the media get tired of rehashing the same old thing over and over again? Can't you people think of anything new to write about?

As far as polls go, it seems there's a new one comes out every couple of hours or so. I'm sick of them. Votes count, polls don't. The ultimate poll will be next Tuesday.

Anonymous said...

Traitors to their party? You mean sort of like Colin Powell? Of course THAT'S not race related. How many very liberal, white candidates has Powell endorsed? Hmmm...... I'll have to get back to you on that.

You're joking, right? You cannot be serious.

10:09: It's blue dog democrats. They're not necessarily traitors, just not as far out in orbit as Obama and his ilk.

Considering Blacks only make up 12% of the population Obama must being doing something right with others races to be leading in the polls and most likely the next President; And to those who have a problem with him being Black/White why don't you revive the old Dixiecrat Party.....

Anonymous said...

Whether black or not people have a right to vote for whomever they like. So please stop making it about race cause the truth whether people are voting for him because he is black or not in the end it't their choice!

I endorse Mr. Barack Obama for President. Reason? Because it's the right thing to do. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. Do it for your country. Vote for Mr. Obama.

To all those calling Obama a "Socialist": Since he is merely proposing a rollback of Bush's tax cuts, does that mean all Presidents prior to GW were Socialists as well?

When did progressive taxation become socialism?

jaye said...

It's amazing, also hard to believe, that people will actually fall for John McCain and Sara Palin's tax rhethoric.
How many people in North Carolina earn over $250,000.00 a year? Not very many! And the majority of people in North Carolina would get a tax break with Senator Obama's tax plan.
So...it can't be the tax issue thats driving McCain's poll numbers up in N.C. so it must be something else. Obama is highly educated and brilliant minded so intelligence can't be the problem.
I've said it since day one.. it's Senator Obama's race, plain and simple. People here won't admit they have racist views but their comments prove it. They would rather elect McCain ( a man without a plan for our country)and Palin (a woman so lacking in knowledge that the republican party is even speaking out against her)than to elect a brilliant man because he has black genes.
McCain will bomb first and ask questions later - he will reinstate the draft - and our country will continue to crumble down around our ears.
Once McCain and Palin are elected you're stuck - and once they've destroyed whats left of our country you'll wish you hadn't been so racist.
JMO of course.

Being black is exactly the reason he has such a lead. 97% of the racist blacks vote, and 95% of the racist liberal votes. If Obama were white he'd never have beaten Hillary.

Fact of the matter is, have you been to early voting in NC yet? If you have, then you have noticed that white males are not dominating the two to three hour lines to vote. Its minorities of all of genders and young people that you see lined up around the block waiting to cast their ballot and for most of them it’s there first time voting. As I person who has lived in Charlotte for 45 years and North Carolina for 55, I think there has never been a problem of getting white males to vote republican in this state no matter what party they are affiliated with, but what you have never had is another demographic to offset the overwhelming support that the GOP receives from these white males. NC is not the same state it was 50 years ago and it definitely not the same state it was 4 years ago in the last presidential race. Transplants from around the country, young voters voting for the first time and high African American turnout is what is going to give NC to Obama no matter how many people think that have heard this before. This is not an ordinary election and Barack Obama is not ordinary candidate. Just go by your local polling place and tell me have you seen anything like this before. The political landscape in America has change and all those people the GOP has counted on for so many years to stay at home and not vote, are actually showing up. And I promise you the African Americans, Latinos, Asians that you see waiting in line, they are not voting for John McCain.

You guys know the "spread the wealth" has been going on in this country since the late 70's. It's called the earned income tax credit. take a look for yourselves.
http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96406,00.html.

Anonymous said...

I don't think it is Obama's tax brackets people have a problem w/, it is the tax credits that basically give money to the (large) percentage of people that currently pay ZERO income tax. These people will basically be getting money they didn’t even earn in the first place. Obama has quickly restructured his proposal to minimize this, but why did it take him 21 months to do so?

Also, as for the comment about the governor race being more important than the president race, there is lot of truth there. Our local economy, school, infrastructure, safety, etc is directly impacted by the decisions made in Raleigh. What happens in DC has a far more minimal impact (other than foreign policy, war, national security, etc). And I agree, vote Pat McCrory for Governor of North Carolina

When voting for a president you shouldn't simply listen to what they say in their campaign...you should look at their history and behavior. Ideological differences are certainly the primary cause for this voters' shift. If you look at Obama's voting record in the Senate, it is crystal clear that he is in the most liberal wing of his party. How he can talk about changing the tone in Washington and government working together is beyond me. It's extremely difficult to reach across the aisle when you sit that far on the other end of the pew. Obviously not everyone agrees with McCain but if you actually look at his career in the Senate, you should get an appreciation for the fact that he knows how to work with pretty much everyone and doesn't just follow along party lines.

McCain know nothing and I'm not that impressed with his record at all. He is the same old politics. I think he should just go home and sit in is rocking chair for us last days and enjoy his life. The man is 72 years old, and can't control hisself much less his running mate. His campaign is in turmoil right now. If he can't run a campiagn he can't run this country.

Its a shame that many on here have reduced Obama's appeal soley to his race. I bet the same people would be up in arms if I reduced McCain's appeal solely to his POW status.

What is even more hilarious is that people on here believe that the difference between distributing the wealth and unfettered capitialism is a 39.5% tax and a 37% tax.

Socialism is the belief that the government should control the means and resources of a country and distribute those to its people.
The only person who has done anything socialist is Palin when she took the huge profits from oil leases and gave everyone a fat 2800 dollar check. But she couldn't be socialist because she likes guns, hates abortion, and says "you betcha"!

The silent majority that could be called to arms with buzz words like "socialist", "communist", and "liberal" now is a minority that resides in the right wing echo chamber.

The new generation of Americans are not so eager to be divided. And when Obama wins it will be painstakingly clear to the demagouges out there who thought the debate about policy ended in the sixties that they are living in the past.

The Federal Progressive Tax System has been 'spreading the wealth' since it was adopted in the '60s. If Obama is a socialist, so are Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, and Bush Jr. Obama is proposing returning the tax burden on the wealthiest 1% to the level it was during the George HW Bush era, and we all know how big a socialist he was.

Obama is proposing maintaining the tax cuts for the middle class, and in some cases cutting taxes more. Obama also clearly stated that those that do not pay taxes will not receive a tax credit. It's not welfare or socialism people, it is fear of defeat that the ultra-right wing is spreading to the easily persuaded.

Martin Luther King Jr. would be furious with the way the race card is being thrown around these days. Wasn't it him who said " I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". The Democrats and the news media are doing the exact opposite! We all know his character needs to be questioned WAY more than it is right now but if you don't vote for him, then your racist. What garbage! It's stories like this that let's me know the liberal left will stop at nothing to get back in. Prove to me it's racist, I'm not voting for him based on his character and what he stands for! End of story!

I want to hear more about the 2001 tape from Obama. This is really important for the country to sort out before election day.

Senator Obama is intelligent and well spoken. The problem is he lacks experience. Are you really comfortable with how he will respond to a crisis? His running mate is convinced that he will be challenged by a foreign leader within six months of being elected. I seriously doubt McCain will be challenged as president.

One other comment: I would not consider someone who doesn't vote along party lines to be a traitor. I would call that an intelligent free thinker.

Somebody asked for the number of people in the US earning above $250,000 per year:

This is by household, not person:

US 2,429,111 of 114,694,201 (2.2%)
NC 50,632 of 3,573,460 (1.4%)
Meck Co 10,645 of 345,639 (3.0%)

Most people will not feel any negative effect with Obama's tax plan. Furthermore, if the wealthy want more people to pay taxes, maybe they need to start paying their employees more!
