The music legend will appear in Charlotte on Sunday, the Obama campaign announced this afternoon. Details to come.
Taylor, a Chapel Hill native, will hold five concerts in all - Charlotte and Asheville on Sunday, Chapel Hill on Monday, and Raleigh and Wilmington on Tuesday.
Said Obama's N.C. campaign: "Taylor will help spread Senator Obama’s message of change to Tar Heel voters and encourage Obama supporters to get out and vote early."
Past concerts for the campaign have been used not only as musical rallies, but as database builders, with concert attendees leaving their names and contact info for the Obama campaign. If Obama wins the election, election scholars will point to efforts like these as part a campaign that changed campaigning.

Cool. I imagine a bunch of McCain supporters will be going.
James Taylor is a class act. Nice to see is not slamming an endorsement down our throats. He is simply via a suttle means showing his support while giving us great music!
I wish more of Hollywood was like JT.
who care's?....another air-headed celeb who has no idea how much damage a socialist like Obama will do to this economy and this country..."spread the wealth?...my butt...you want wealth..work for it!
I would love to go to the concert but I will be voting for McCain!
Celebs are just as entitled to have an opinion and to vote as any other citizen. Get over it.
Dean Smith also supports Obama; Go Tarheels!!!!!!
Where will it be?
I hope JT is ready to pony over more of his earnings when Obama gets elected. Bet he won't be holding anymore 'free' concerts then. Or maybe that's his plan. If I don't make any money, the socialists can't take it away...
I like JT, but simply cannot stomach Obama.
I am a McCain supporter who will go to see james, not changing my vote though.
How easy it is to decide not to use public funding when you have all these whack job liberals giving you all the money you want!
Want to know what's wrong with America? It's the loose moral fiber we've been allowing to get looser for 30 years! Obama stands for all that is wrong with this country! Just another enterainer who should focus a little more on entertaining and a little less on politics!
And, why do the dems need my address/phone number to attend this "free" concert? Makes ya wonder!
Obama and Socialism? Then Bush is definitely a Socialist because he has given most of America's wealth to China.
Looking forward to going to the concert.... and voting for Obama. I wish I could go the concert that The Boss and Billy joel are putting on for a fundraiser.
Hard to imagine that any of McCain's ever dwindling clan of supporters would appreciate the music and message of JT. Fans of Obama and JT alike can attend the concert to celebrate Obama's impending, massive victory -- and the demise of racist, trickle-down Republican dogma.
"Just another enterainer who should focus a little more on entertaining and a little less on politics!"
Yeah, why don't you tell the same thing to Ted Nugent, Charlie Daniels, and Lee Greenwood among others. I wonder when those guys are coming to town...
For the record, Obama is not a socialist, but at this moment, I'd take a socialist over the cristofasciest any day.
WHERE is the concert? WHEN will it be held? HOW MUCH is parking?
Guess a donkey is as close as JT can get to the Horse these days.
Sorry, had to say it.
anon 2:24....Racist? Because the current administration doesnt favor African Americans over every one else? I guess treating all races equal, and not handing out free money in the inner city constitutes being a racist.
Anon 1:57....Celebrities are entitled to their opinion, but need to keep it to themselves. I cant promote my opinion, so neither should they.
Barack Obama- The next President of the United States of America. Get over if Righties....you had your chance, you put a buffoon in office, and you you are going to pay for it. Great Job!!!!
I bet watching Barack win this election is a little bit like what we went thru watching Dubya get elected.....twice. Now we have to clean up his mess. Just like we did after his father, although I would take Herbert over Dubya any day....with a gun to my head of course.
It is rather funny how many so-called "big name" celebrities are for Obama. Have they looked at who would get socked with the most taxes???? They are in for a rude awakening.
They say elephants never forget...all you McCain supporters out there sure are having a hard time remembering the last 8 years!! More of the same?!? I don't think so...and apparently neither does Mr. Taylor. Keep true to the McCain/Palin campaign though...more negativity and outbursts of "socialist! terrorist!" This republican army is driving me crazy! No class!
Mudslide Slim JT is a good Carrboro Orange County NC born and reared guy who hit it internationally big in the early
70s selling 100 million albums with Sweet Baby James and a few others.
His parents were both UNC Chapel Hill professors both from NC also who ultimately left in their old age to retire on Marthas Vineyard and are deceased.
James screwed up hi career marrying Carly BIG LIPS Simon in 1973 for a short time and moved to Marthas Vineyard since she refused to move to NC so he moved as did his parents.
In 1975 Taylor screwed up his career that was almost dead anyway doing Mockingbird with Simon and the world wrote him off and the song as an insult.
The rest is history. Taylors brain cells long vanished with his hair and its been 35 yrs since he was a serious force in music so its no wonder he is trying to cash in using Obama.
He remarried and lives meagerly off concerts in small venues and recently made a country cd.
Obama wont help his career that died with the Mockingbird other than the Chevy Chase Griswalds singing it in Vacation Movies.
Where do all these McCain-ites get there ideas about socialism?? If they went to public schools, they studied in socialist institutions. If they drive on paved roads and highways, they are using socialist services. If they take their kids to the parks for soccer on Saturday, they are playing on socialist fields. Now, they can bank at the socialist bank - thanks to W and his financial prowess over the past 8 years. The country is tanking financially because the Republicans had single party rule for 6 years and have been belligerent beyond reason for the last 2 (R's don't tax and spend, they just spendspendspendspendspendspendspend until we stop them on Nov 4). The times they are a-changin' folks, one way or the other. Thanks JT for bringing it home!
This is useless without the where and when...
Folks,
Campaign says details on the concerts to come.
Peter
The fact that a rich man like James Taylor is willing to campaign for Obama speaks volumes. Here is a man who stands to pay more in taxes under Obama's plan but who places his interest in what's best for the country above his self interest. On the other hand, the vast vast majority of people who stand to pay less in taxes under Obama's plan (those who make less than $250,000.00 per year) call him a "socialist" and worse. It is testament to the brainwashing that republicans have engaged in these past election cycles. And look where we are! You want 4 more years of the WORST PRESIDENT EVER? Then go with McBush and his barely literate running mate. I am a republican for OBAMA! Enough is enough!
If someone says "times they are a-changin'" again, I think I'll throw up!
Remeber that "rich" people use tax shelters and other ways to report less than their actual earnings and if you think for one minute that he will not tax those who make less than $250K then I think you may be wrong. We have heard all this rhetoric before. Neither candidate is worth voting for. We just have to choose the lesser of the 2 evils.
I hate it when celebrities give their endorsements of candidates! They can vote for whoever they choose, but by voicing their political or religious opinions, they just alienate fans! I don't listen to music or watch tv shows or movies to hear their political or religious views! Keep it to yourselves!!!!!!!
Let's get one thing straight. Most celebrities make so much money, tax rates don't always matter to them. If you make $30 million a year, a 5% tax increase doesn't exactly put a dent in your spending. I agree with some of the other posts. Celebrities should stick to acting, singing, etc. Politics should be off the table. It's one thing to have an opinion. It's another to go on and on about an endorsement. Personally, I really don't care what any celebrity thinks. I have my own mind.
The socialism is coming folks. You just don't see it. Even temporary union workers will have the same rights as full time employees under Obama's future administration. That's insane. It will take years to reverse what Obama will do in the next four years. I dread it but I accept it.
Latest word is Moore Square at noon
Also - for the poster who said celebrites should keep their ideas to themseleves becasue he/she can't promote his/her own -
You can promote your own.
IT'S CALLED FREE SPEECH!
"Have they looked at who would get socked with the most taxes???? "
Maybe, just maybe, JT has a higher moral calling than pure greed and selfishness.
If he was selfish, he'd back McCain and use all those tax breaks to make himself even more wealthy, stick his earnings in a low-risk fund where they'll never erode, and disappear from public life.
Instead we see him working for free, on behalf of a plan to tax him a little more for the benefit of all. Perhaps he simply isn't a greedy man, and wants to do the right thing to lead our nation in a better direction. Perhaps he is simply taking the high road.
Is that so hard to understand?
so·cial·ism (sō'shə-lĭz'əm)
n.
1) Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.
2)The stage in Marxist-Leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved.
So public schools and driving on roads is socialism. Um, ok.
How about true socialism - tax credits to the 35% on people who don't pay any taxes. They get a free check? WTH? Person A makes $300k/year, working 70+ hours a week, but has to turn around and give the government 40% so the governement can (through government, aka socialist, programs) give it to Person B, who sits on the couch in his subsidized housing watching Oprah.
Think about the socialist housing programs where you (taxpayer, hardworker) pay $1500/mo., but your subsidized neighbor, through Sec. 8 program pays $500/mo for the exact same thing? How is that not taking from the well-off and giving to the not so well off?
People should be able to support the community programs of their choice (and many do) through Crisis Assistance, United WAy (bad example in Charlotte unfortunately), Red Cross, etc, etc. We shouldn't be forced through taxes to subsidize those who won't take responsibility for themselves.
Do I not remeber "Big & Rich" and other music celebs opening and appearing for MCain? So how can anyone critize JT for Obama?
You people are insane. Utterly and completely insane. After ALL of this that ALL of us have been encountering for the last..nevermind. Its like talking to a wall.
James is a mentally sound musician.
I wish others would wake up.
We don't need another Bush administration. McCain and Palin are only puppets. And they both have proven how they lack in substance.
