A "godless" drop? Dole falls behind Hagan

Is Elizabeth Dole paying for her ad linking Kay Hagan to atheist advocates?

A new Rasmussen poll released this afternoon shows Hagan leading Dole, 52-46, in the race for Dole's U.S. Senate seat. The lead is the largest Hagan has had in any poll - save one - this month. Recent polls had shown Dole tightening the race to 3-4 points, with one showing a two-point Dole lead.

Rasmussen conducted the full survey yesterday as an angry Hagan blasted Dole for an ad criticizing Hagan's attendance at a fundraiser hosted by a member of the Godless Americans political action committee:

The ad concluded: “Godless Americans and Kay Hagan. She hid from cameras. Took godless money. What did Hagan promise in return?” A voice that sounds like Hagan's says: "There is no God."

The September fundraiser cited in the ad was held in honor of Hagan in Boston by Sen. John Kerry and other Democratic supporters. The event was co-hosted by 35 people at the home of Woody Kaplan, who is listed on the advisory board for a group called the Godless Americans Political Action Committee.

Hagan, who called the ad "pathetic," said the voice at the end of the ad was not hers. Hagan, an elder at First Presbyterian Church at Greensboro, told reporters that she has taught Sunday School there and gone on youth missions.

Hagan also threatened legal action if the Dole campaign did not pull the ad by Noon today. The Dole campaign said Wednesday it had no intention of doing so. No word yet from the Hagan campaign on the deadline passing.

(Update, 2 p.m.: Hagan campaign spokeswoman Colleen Flanagan says: "We are moving forward with our legal options.")

I was undecided until Dole "approved this message."

"You shall reap what you sow".
How appropriate!

much ado about nothing; so a Democrat from NC takes money from a "godless" fundraiser; probably so do some Republicans.
I dare say Hagan probably also takes money from people who advocate killing unborn babies.

Hagan's response would have been better if she had said, "so what? Plenty of North Carolinians are atheists or agnostics, and I'm interested in representing them too."

Unfortunately, a belief in god is still a prerequisite for higher office.

I'm voting for Cole. Both of these candidates make me sick.

Just goes to show: it is better to be godless than godawful.

Liddy Dole...what a waste of a senator. She is by far the worst senator in our state's history. This ad just shows how low she'll stoop to try to hold on to her office. It is the nastiest ad I've ever seen in my long life. 33 days in two years? We should have impeached her for cheating the people in our state. Thank goodness that Liddy the old Biddy is history after Tuesday, and no one cares if this "Bushie" ever comes back to North Carolina.

Yet another Republican going down in flames due to reckless, hateful campaigning.

I truly hope the GOP learns its lesson about civility on Tuesday, but something tells me they won't.

Anonymous said...

Just curious- How do you kill something that is unborn?

Anonymous said...

Anyone who makes and approves a message such as that should LOSE!! That was a low blow and certainly an act of desperation on her and her campaigns part. I hope she goes down in flames, as she should!

That's missing the point. Hagan is NOT an atheist, she's an elder in her church for crying out loud. The ad was an outright lie, the sort of thing that ought to be prosecuted on libel charges.

For all Rupublicans who voted for Bush in 2004 are you sure he didn't become an undercover Democrat because he has destroyed your Party.....

1:58: Killing requires life, not birth; ergo, an unborn child could be killed (a crime recognized in many states, depending on the development of the unborn child)

Kay Hagan's victory, along with all the other democrats will indeed prove that there IS a God.

Liddy, when you make a deal with the devil, you're gonna get burned.

Liz Dole just buried herself.

I don't have a problem with the ad. Dole never said Hagan didn't believe in God. It looks like Hagan taking this too seriously. If she didn't have anything to hide, why is she so upset?
Hagan has run some terrible ads herself. It's payback time.
Why aren't we talking about a real poll? The one that says now more Americans trust McCain on the economy over Obama. Oh that's right, the media doesn't want to bring that one up.

cue the chants of nah, nah, nah, nah! nah, nah, nah, nah! hey, hey, hey, goodbye!...

...and 85 North! 85 North.

Adios, Liddy.

At this point, Dole deserves to lose the election. I would hope people in NC would see through this stunt...and most importantly, realize that being a Christian is not a requirement for serving in a position of power (hence, "seperation of church and state) Historical note for Liddy: Many of the forefathers were anything BUT Christians!

so why are Democrats hanging out with Atheist group with radical, untraditional views? the Dole ad was 100% accurate, too bad it hurt 'feelings'.

I thinks she's behind because she's been a lousy advocate for N.C., the ad is gross and mostly untrue. When Dole was the head of the RNC or whatever her role was, she mainly traveled the country, appeared on talk shows, and raised money for Republican candidates. Jesse Helms held this seat for over 30 years and there were always at least 1/2 the people (myself included) that disagreed with him and hated his politics. No one doubted that he worked his heart out for N.C. though. I never thought Dole had the least interest in N.C., I don't care that she lived in Salisbury 50 years ago. I work with U.S. airways and wrote to her during one of our bankruptcy's, myself and other co-workers got a generic email from her. I have friends at Wachovia, she was silent on this issue as well. I can't imagine what Jesse Helms reaction would have been to see major companies based in N.C. going down the drain. He would have at least utilized some of his contacts and tried to do something. I have already cast my vote for Hagan, but if she is no better, I will ready and willing to vote her out in 6 years.

being a member of a church doesn't mean you are a beleiver necessarily.

anyway, had say Dole been at a fundraiser hosted at a house of a neo-nazi leader would it not be an issue?

newsflash, most people beleive in God and are outraged at militant Atheist like Hagan is allying with.

We fight a war against the Taliban for taking control of the govt of Afghanistan and persecuting those who dont adhere to their strick fundamentalist religious beliefs.

Then Elizabeth Dole (and others) attack anyone who doesn't adhere to their strict fundamentalist beliefs.

Dole's oppenent, Kay Hagan, is a Christian and a leader in her Presbyterian Church. But that's beside the point.

There is NO place for religious intolerance in America and especially in the halls of the US congress.

Even if I agreed with Elizabeth Dole on every other issue, I would vote against her based on this one ad.

I live here in NC and our entire state is ashamed of Sen Dole (as we were of Jesse Helms).

Dole got my vote when she voted against the big-bank bailout package. Unlike a lot of people, I think it's important what legislators DO, more than what they SAY. That's also the reason for my McCain vote. I don't believe Obama has actually done anything similar to what he says he WILL do. In fact, his actions show that he will do the opposite from most of his promises.

So.. Hagan is upset not because she took money from that group, but that someone put it in an ad? How does that make the atheists feel?

Here's a story you want see in the MSM. An Actual Al-Qaeda LEADER Officially Calls for Defeat of Bush "and His Party," Thus Endorsing the Democrats; Media Strangely Uninterested.

yet a couple weeks ago the media thought an ananmous comment on an internet forumn claiming AQ wanted McCain elected was national news, plugged by this blog!!!!

we'll all be better off if voters decisively reject rovean manipulation tactics.
between the fallen corrupt republican senators and the crimes of the bush administration, we've endured the worst federal government in the last 50 years, perhaps longer--far worse, in fact than the nixon era government. ya'd think the voters would draw the appropriate conclusion, the supreme court rebuffing bush time and again, administration employees retiring and sometimes confessing, 3-4 republican senators stepping down. and then there's the iraq war, torture, wiretapping and the loss of constitutional liberty, the friends of bush enron scandal, and the ridiculous manipulation of the voters.

'godless' accusations are no worse than 'in the pocket of big oil' accusations. They are all intended to 'shed light' on the record and/or character of the opponent. It is necessary as an informed voter to understand policy positions and character traits of the candidates but this entire election season demonstrates more clearly than ever that money talks (and wins elections). Regardless of what you think about Dole, recognize that the DNC will stop at nothing to get Hagan elected. The Democrat's objective is to control the White House, Senate, and House, concentrating sufficient power to enact their agenda because the Republicans won't have enough votes to stop them. The 30 minute prime time 'Obama-mercial' should give you a clue what unlimited funds can buy - an election.

Dole finally managed to accomplish something as Senator - she has made national headlines for her godless lies and now that is how she will be remembered in NC...

----

last week a free documentary was shown at Ballaytyne Village theater called "The Singing Revolution"

Lets just say, Jesse Helms is a hero in the Eastern block states like Estonia, an absolute hero. They have given him their highest medal of honor. They are not the least bit 'ashamed'.

In the meantime, just breaking ( I wonder if Observer picks it up)

Audit: NC first lady travel expenses unreasonable
RALEIGH, N.C., 10.30.2008
AP

Two cultural exchange trips to Europe led by first lady Mary Easley incurred nearly $46,000 in ``unreasonable and excessive expenses'' paid for by taxpayers, State Auditor Les Merritt said Thursday.

The Department of Cultural Resources said Easley traveled to France in May 2007 and Estonia and Russia in May 2008 as part of efforts to recruit art exhibits to North Carolina.

Merritt said the traveling parties overspent and wasted state money by requiring a chauffeur-driven luxury car in France for the first lady that cost $27,000, paying for tickets to a Russian ballet and staying in high-end hotels.

The hotel rooms cost on average $955 per person per night in St. Petersburg, Russia, while a lunchtime caviar cocktail there cost $332, according to Merritt. During the trip to France, Easley's former executive assistant expensed to the state a ``Meal for 4'' for $227.50 that actually turned out to be a linen jacket purchased at a boutique.

crystalsbass,
You're voting for Dole because she voted against the big-bank bailout package and your voting for McCain for the same reason? You know McCain voted for the big-bank bailout package? You think politicians doing what they say is more important than what they actually do? Are you just a little confused?

There is nothing Christian about lying about your opponent and being sleazy.

Real Christians will be offended and disgusted by Dole's tactics.

Jesus would NOT approve of Dole's lies about Hagan.

Then again, Jesus wouldnt approve of Dole's cheering on a war that has killed millions of innocents, Doles' support to give more to the wealthy and ignore those most needy, and frankly for that matter...all of the Republican platform outside of abortion.

Godless? 99% of what the Republicans say and do.

Liberals? Almost all of their message of helping others and loving your neighbor is EXACTLY what Jesus Christ preached.

NO MORE PERVERSION OF CHRIST'S MESSAGE BY THE REPUBLICAN RIGHT!

This country would be so much better if the Religious Right didn't have as much influence. Thank God that's the direction we're going.

I wonder if Liddy Dole has ever accepted money from Jews? Surely that would be taboo as accepting from atheists since they deny Jesus as the Messiah. The fact is, her ad is despicable, and the Bible clearly says, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." What is worse is the assumption Dole makes about the people of NC--that they are all as narrow-minded, uneducated, judgmental and fanatical as she apparently is. Apparently she didn't get the memo. Jesse Helms is dead, and so is HIS NC. We've all grown up and moved on. Liddy needs to move on also--back to Kansas where she belongs and let a true North Carolina resident take her place.

I voted for Dole and will NEVER vote for a Hagan type person. She has ruined this state. Businesses are leaving for South Carolina because of the high taxes she helped impose on all of us. We aren't #1 in taxes in the southeast because of Elizabeth Dole. Hagan got us there.

If she can do that sitting in N.C. how much more damage can she do to you and your family in Washington?

I see ridiculous post like "You shall reap what you sow ,How appropriate!"

Now that has to be by someone who has never read a scripture. That would apply to Kay Hagan since she was the one who was wrong to call herself a christian and accept money from people who deny everything christians stand for and want to see everything christian removed from public in this country.

I hope Kay Hagan doesn't reap what she sows. As for MS. Dole, she has nothing to worry about on that front. It's all good.

"we'll all be better off if voters decisively reject rovean manipulation tactics. between the fallen corrupt republican senators"

Thats as one sided as it gets!

Can this poster spell William Jefferson (D. LA) and his cold cash. Because the media doesn't report Democrat corruption they boast proudly, like a chicken on its way to slaughter, that it's one sided.....NOT!

I see every main stream media taken comment in that post, LOL! Another person marching in perfect step with the left wing. There are literally no free thinking people in that party outside of Joe Lieberman!

You forgot the Democratic party litmus test for judges - are you for killing innocent babies all the way through 9th month of preganancy? That really what Jesus was teaching, right?

Most of the posts are just liberal jibber jabber from people who have never voted before and certainly do not know what our elected officials have done and not done. Kay Hagan is the worst sort - an Easley supporter. They have brought alot of damage to North Carolina.

WE NEED ELIZABETH DOLE IN WASHINGTON. I HAVE ALREADY VOTED AND I VOTED FOR ELIZABETH DOLE.

Do yourselves a favor and vote for Senator Dole, too. Nothing about the Hagan woman is good.

You had me rolling on the floor and hee-hawing, for sure! Some readers really do have an interesting sense of humor! But seriously speaking, Senator Lady Dole really did step on a deep faux pas! That "Godless" ad wasn't so funny, and could very well send Mrs. Dole swimming underwater this time....

Robin Hayes, Gomer Dole, Pat McCrory, Jesse Helms are all cut from the same mold. They all believe in the same campaign tactics when they are desperate. All these folks also claimed that they had a deep religious faith. Lord help us if this is how the faithful promote their causes.

Truth hurts. You'd think she have the homeowner checked out as to politicial org. he supports for cryin out loud. Is that how she's gonna run things? Maybe she doesn't care where the money comes from as long as it comes! If you believe in God then you would NEVER take money from an org. or anyone associated with this godless org. who want to take God off money, out of govt., & basically out of our lives!! They already have threatened businesses that tell customers "merry christmas" with lawsuits, notice how employees say happy holidays now? And it's not much ado about nothing it says alot about the person you truly are! If the rep. can find out about this guys associations then why can't her camp? duh!And I'd bet the house that if a rep. got money from this guy they'd return it, but they'd probly find out who and what hesupported before they held a fundraiser at the guys house!!
As for mud slinging lets remind all you dems that hagan started yes she started the nasty ads way before liddy!! Guess that doesn't matter liddy's just supposed to sit back and bite the bullet huh? The dems. slay me with all this blaming the rep. for mud slinging whenthe dems usually start it. Just like when obama stated in his ad that mccain was out of touch, heck he doesn't even know howto use e-mail says the ad, when the REAL truth is he knows how to use it but CAN'T becuz of WAR INJURIES he sustained as a prisoner of war for over 5 yrs.!!!! Which hecould of been released from this torturous hell but rebuffed his release as their were men there longer than him that deserved to be released first!! You think obama would of done that? No he wouldn't of, the man doesn't have that kind of morals.not alot of people do.It takes alot to know you're gonna be tortured even more but you stick to your morals above all else.
