Garry Trudeau has submitted his strip for Wednesday morning newspapers across the country. The strip is set in Iraq, where Doonesbury's military characters are gathered around a TV when an Obama victory is announced. Our guess is about half of you will find it funny.
The Observer won't be running the strip Wednesday, says features editor Mike Weinstein. Our Wednesday features section goes to press on Monday night, before the election. If John McCain wins on Tuesday, the Doonesbury strip would seem odd - perhaps confusing - although it would still be funny to half of you (but not the same half.)
Trudeau's syndicate has sent in a substitute strip - a rerun from earlier this year - that we'll use.

Doonesbury picks a winner (but we don't)

Doonesbury?
Let them run it. It may be the last laugh we have before Obama takes over. Our economy will go downhill after he's in office. Maybe the comic strip should add a last section. Maybe one shot that shows all the manufacturing plants moving overseas after Obama's tax increases and mandates about hiring US workers forces them to leave the country. Pretty soon Detroit will be the example for every major city in the US.
I'm so glad the Observer respects the intelligence of its readership so much that it thinks a comic strip might be "confusing".
No wonder McClatchy stock chart looks like this:

From 43 to under 3 in two years. Y'all are doin' a heckuva job, Observer folks!
The author assumes that we'll know the winner by Wednesday.
Garry Trudeau hasn't been relevant in about 20 years. The Observer would do its readers a favor and save some money if they jettisoned his cruddy comic strip.
And to all you Democrats: If Obama wins, remember that YOU asked for it. No more than your usual amount of whining and crying when things REALLY get bad in the Obamacracy.
The economy has alreay went downhill with Bush and if McCain wins oh excuse McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time so I will say if McCain wins it will make the economy worst!
Vote Obama!
vote Obama!

Have you ever actually listened to what Obama is planning? He is planning to offer temporary tax cuts to businesses that HIRE AMERICAN workers. This would encourage businesses to say in the US and actually hire workers from this country. This wouldn't result in these corporations packing their bags and leaving town, it may actually end up encouraging quite a few to come back to the US.
And you're right, it should add one more panel, the world celebrating once he does become President because then our economy can come out of the tank and we can actually be the great nation this country has the potential to be.
I didn't ask for Bush but I'm dealing with everything being a mess. So Obama will be very pleasant experience since I voted for him.
if mccain wins we will all have to deepen our relationship with god (when we spend all our time on our knees praying that mccain does'nt die and we have president bulldog with lipstick) its time that someone besides those who don't understand that this is not a cristian run govt. is in office
The Observer has been predicting an Obama win, has tried to insure an Obama win by attacking the other ticket. Why now are you suddenly thinking McCain might win?
I simply cannot believe the Charlotte Observer has become so simple minded that it thinks readers may be "confused". Give us a break.
In response to: anonymous said..."this is not a cristion run..."
What school system allowed you to pass? I have no idea where your coming from?
insert David Petraus having over 1k troops re-inlist on Fourth of July in Saddam's Palace voluntarily here:
Insert the over 11 Million hits youtube of Iraq vet video to Obama here:
there's not a chance Obama would be dumb enough to actually leave iraq
"The Observer has been predicting an Obama win, has tried to insure an Obama win by attacking the other ticket. Why now are you suddenly thinking McCain might win?"
They don't think that at all. Now that the election season is almost over, they are trying desperately to restore the illusion that they have been even-handed throughout this entire process. Of course, anyone capable of thinking for themselves will not fall for this transparent ruse.
The fact that the Observer endorsed Obama tells you all you need to know. They might as well print "We love Obama and so do you, if you know what's good for you."

"I have no idea where YOUR coming from"
What school system allowed YOU to graduate??? It's YOU'RE!
If Trudeau wants his strip to run Wednesday, papers should run it Wednesday. Timing is part of the art.
Newspapers are having a heckuva time keeping themselves pertinent in a world of internet - as indicated by all the responses online for this blog.
The Daily Comics are one piece of the 'inky folding paper' that the online versions of newspapers have not been able to duplicate.
Lighten up!
It's humor.
It's a freakin' CARTOON!
But hey, who am I to tell the smart folks on South Tryon how to run their newspaper?? I'm only a subscriber ... for now.

Have you read the news yet this year?
Please stop the personal attacks. You may disagree on policy (for example trickle-down or trickle-up, pro middle class or pro upper class) but there is absolutely no reason to accuse either candidate of not caring about America. I do think the divisiveness and deliberate scare tactics in an attempt to win the election have been extremely damaging to us all, will result in even more problems for the next administration. Hopefully, the losing candidate will make a huge effort to encourage his supporters to back the new administration if he is really as patriotic as he claims to be. We all should sincerely try to work together to rebuild our economy and our standing in the world.
50% of the population laughing at a comic strip actually sounds pretty good to me. Most comic strips will be lucky to achieve 35% in their lifetime.
I agree that it is a comic strip. Guess we all have to Google it now. Or look at our RSS feed reader.
