Welcome to Primary Day. Be good. Vote.
We'll be joining you in this space just before the polls close at 7:30 p.m., and we'll take you through all the news and races - state and national - on election night.
The biggest race, of course, is the one for the Democratic nomination. What should you look for as the N.C. exit polls - and the results - come in tonight? Here are the numbers that matter:
The White Vote for Clinton, 65 percent: The Clinton campaign has focused its campaigning largely on the white, blue-collar vote in North Carolina. Hillary Clinton has spent most of her time away from the big cities here, and husband Bill has toured dozens of rural N.C. towns and smaller cities. If the exit polls show Hillary Clinton winning more than 65 percent of the white vote, that'll mean those small-town voters have turned out for her. Without that number, she likely won't win.
The African-American turnout, 35 percent: The big question among pollsters this week is how many blacks will vote in North Carolina. In 2004, 32 percent of N.C. voters were black. In early voting this year, the total was just more than 40 percent. The latter total is likely due to Obama's significant get-out-the-vote efforts, but if Obama can approach that number today - say, a 35 percent black turnout - his win will be more than five points. If the turnout is less than 30 percent, Clinton will be celebrating.
The Meck Vote, 200K: You'll likely be reading about busy precincts and record turnout in Mecklenburg County today. The more voters that show, the better the news for Obama. Mecklenburg offers his best demographics - young voters, black voters, better-educated voters. If the Democratic primary vote approaches 200,000 here, that's good news for him.
And finally, one more thing to think about, for us: We want to know what you see at the polls today - not only what might be wrong, but what is right. You're likely tired of hearing about this being an historic election year. Well, it is. Voters are turning out in record numbers, and now it's our turn. Enjoy it. Look around. Tell us what you see. Tell us your story.
Your Morning Buzz:
On the last day of campaigning, candidates and their spouses criss-crossed the state to make final pleas to voters - writes a team of McClatchy reporters.
The Times Adam Nagourney offers a thorough breakdown on what victories - or losses - in N.C. and Indiana would mean for the candidates.
Both candidates did their best to be just regular (Ivy League/wealthy/powerful) folk, writes Eli Saslow of the Washington Post.
The Washington Post's Dan Blaz has eight questions - big picture and small - to consider while you wait for the results.
Indiana is excited about mattering, too.
The candidates retooled their message on trade for N.C. and Indiana, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Two thoughtful writers, the Chicago Tribune's Mary Schmich and Eric Zorn, debate when to end the race.
And finally, in case you were wondering, John and Elizabeth Edwards decided not to endorse.

OBAMA
Over the past several days - including late Monday - I have seen Clinton supporters, both in my neighborhood and at voting places, removing and/or destroying Obama signs replacing them with Clinton signs. Disgraceful - but assumably typical of a Clinton-type campaign.
Why Some White People Have To Vote For Obama?
It is extremely difficult for a person with any intelligence to
understand why some White people have voted for Obama. To vote for him is simply an admission that the American overwhelming majority Whites are incompetent and incapable of managing and leading their own country. That Whites have to reduce their status themselves by asking a Black man whose ancestors were not even American to do such important jobs. Are they too lazy to do it themselves. Shame!
I'm excited about this election. I voted at Hickory Grove early this morning and was in line at 6 am. By 6:30 the line was out the door. It's sad that people like the person who left the comment at 11:59 am thinks the way he/she does--but I guess to each his own. The country is ready for a change and should change. No one group of people should run this country--it belongs to all of us. The person that wrote that comment should realize that his/her ancestors probably weren't from this country either. Just ignorance.
According to the stats, it appears that blacks will vote for Oboma based solely on race. Is that not racist?
What stats. Again ignorance. There are black people voting for Hillary just as there are white people voting for Obama. Get over it.
Our polling place down at Calvary church was well organized though it took some time for them to find their groove (it was 6:30am). Regarding the previous poster's comments, I am a proud supporter of Obama...and I'm white. Frankly, I'm getting tired of the race card...it's about vision and leadership...we need someone who can reinvigorate this country, and someone who can bolster our image to the world.
Status of voting in Cabarrus County, Cox Mill Elementary School, 10:15 am: Only a few people were in the gym voting (about 10). I turned in the 210th ballot. Will there be more towards the voting deadline?
Go Obama!
Senator Obama's economic policies sets him apart, from all the candidates so far in US electioneering history. These policies in principle, should be very helpful for long term growth and faster economic development. For this election, Senator Obama has been able to get massive support from people from various demographies, young and old, male and female, race and religion, social and economic strata. Never before has any election seen such a sea of humanity supporting someone with a common goal for a change. Wish him best of luck, as we all pursue for this change and elect him for Democratic candidature as well as for the highest office of Presidency. Amen
What kind of change?
Obviously there will be a change - Bush isn't running! But do we really want a far-left leaning liberal with little experience and a naive view of foreign policy to be elected president?
I've been wanting to get this out for a long time. I have a co-worker who supported Bush and his war when it began. This person had a son then who was not out of high school yet but was all for the war. When her son finished high school and decided he wanted to entlist in the military, she was devestated. Her family did all they could to change his mind and they did. The support for Bush and his war is different when it's not your child. Sure there are people who send their children off to Iraq and then there are those who send other people's children off but keep theirs at home.
Clinton supporters defaced my Obama yard sign on Sunday night. Shame on them!!!
What one may call "naive" foreign policy, I would call humble and honest foreign policy. That's the kind of foreign policy that we've sorely been lacking. Bush-style preemptive war and sabre-rattling is all we're hearing from the Clinton campaign in recent days. I say that's more of the same old bad politics. We need real change in Washington, D.C. We need Barack Obama.
VOTE OBAMA '08!
I have seen the samw thing! The person who wrote that she has seen Clinton people taking down Obama signs and then putting a Clinton sign or two in its place -- I have seen that several times over the past few days.
That's just not right.
Obama says he will give legitimacy to terrorist organizations. Do you not think that is naive and dangerous?
A Clinton canvasser approached me at Alive After Five last week in Charlotte. When I politely informed him that I was supporting Barack Obama, the verbal assault on me began. He told me I didn't even know what I was talking about and told me that one way or another HIllary was going to make sure that she won. These kind of people scare me - and they are a big reason that Clinton scares me more. Even their canvassers are starting to act like Bill!
"Obama says he will give legitimacy to terrorist organizations. Do you not think that is naive and dangerous?"....No. Obama said he would not fear to negotiate....you decided what that meant for yourself. Those are not his words.
Clinton campaigners came onto my lawn and slapped HILLARY stickers all over my Obama yard sign. Just rediculous to behave that way and talk about "EXPERIENCE" all the time.
"Obama says he will give legitimacy to terrorist organizations"?!?!
Say what?! What planet are you from? Or more importantly, what are you smoking?? Obama said no such thing.
Clinton supporters, stop with the lies and the verbal assaults and the physical destruction of people's property!!!
I am really ashamed of my peers. A few peers have admitted to voting for Obama because of the color of his skin. The best candidate will not chosen if this is how we chose our future leader of this country.
A Clinton, Bush, Dole or Gore has been on the ticket EVERY YEAR since 1976. Do we REALLY wnat 4 or even 8 more years of the same old Washington Dynasty soap opera - particularly in the case of the CLINTONS!! A vote for Hillary is a vote to continue that soap opera.
Is the Observer aware that there are Republican primaries, including a hotly contested gubernatorial race involving our mayor? The lack of coverage is remarkable, but not surprising given the openly left-leaning political staff, several of whom openly campaign for Democratic candidates.
I just want to bring up that my Hillary sign was taken out of my yard this passed weekend. Just so you know that both candidate supporters are acting childish.
Maybe that tells you that you shouldn't have had a "Hillary" sign in your yard to begin with...
Yeah...and it's "PAST weekend". Shows you the average education level of Hillary supporters.
this is just a small FYI. I went to vote at noon today at AllenBrook school. They had a computer shut down and were receiving error messages and had to stop people from voting until they got it fixed. I had to leave before I could vote. Additionally, there is construction blocking 1/2of the small street leading up to the school that will definitely cause a delay as the evening progresses. What are the implications ( I leave them up to you)

Why Some White People Have To Vote For Obama?
My reply to this is, they are not blinded by the petty differences of race and are open to change. and unfortunately, yes the White males who have been running the country in our most recent history have sold All Americans, Black, Red, White & Blue up the river for profit and personal gain Obama is a difference maker and i believe he will make a valid effort to make the American Govenrment once again work for the people it is supposed to represent....Citizens of the USA. I do believe Hillary will be bogged down by those that have always hounded the Clintons. and it will be very diffucult for her to make effective policy changes. but that is a different subject matter
According to the stats,
my reply to this. tell me since the US have held elections haven't Whites for their candidate who they most identified with them.
not that this is my only reason. Obama is NOT a poot butt. He is a strong more than viable candidate, who has worked directly and recently in the trenches to help everyday working families. Ms Clinton, is too far away fromt hose she claims to represent....she should have ran against Bush last time I know I would have voted for her, but instead, sat on the sidelines and watched the Show........
Isn't the whole point that Obama is half-white, too? What is a white person anyway? All of our ancestors came from someplace else. We've all tried to make America together. Who actually believes that whiteness is really some important thing to hold onto anymore?
What is whiteness anyway? Come on, dude. Get over yourself and your skin color. My ancestors were European, and slave owners, and probably, surely, I have some cousins that share my "white" ancestors too. Why are they not white? I mean, this isn't the time for Race 101, but folks, we are living in the complicated multicultural 21st century, and lets vote for a candidate who reflects that
In Davidson today, A thirty-ish woman was asked..."are you registered as a republican or democrat" She loudly replied- "I don't know. What does it matter? I just want to vote for Obama."
Another informed voter.
"Obama said he would not fear to negotiate...."
Negotiating with terrorist organizations legitimizes them. It brings them to the table as a legitimate player.
If you're sitting here reading this -- haven't voted because you think your vote can't change this lousy economy or war -- step away from the computer, grab your keys and get out and VOTE.
A vote for HIllary is a vote for experience and competence.
Yes, this blog is a sign from God.

Some of these posts provide a strong argument against allowing anonymous postings. If you have an opinion worth sharing you ought to have integrity enough to attach your name to it.
But--of course--it wasn't worth sharing and you have no integrity.

Another white rural NC voter (with a graduate degree) for OBAMA.
Please note I am tired of people taking this excellent experiment in democracy all the wrong way. The Democratic party should not splinter because two excellent candidates are in a heated battle. This is what the process should be like so that the candidate who can garner the most support can be nominated to represent our party and go to battle with the Republicans. IF YO DON'T SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR YOU PARTY'S NOMINEE WHOMEVER IT IS, YOU ARE PLAYING RIGHT INTO THE HANDS OF OUR TRUE OPPOSITION, THE REPUBLICANS. REALLY THINK ABOUT DO YOU WANT MORE OF THE SAME WASHINGTON POLITICS THAT WE HAVE FOR THE PAST 7 YEARS..OUR COUNTRY'S A MESS.
